Starter?

Hi all

Recently did my alternator got a new denso

Noticed my car is still struggling now and then to start. Yesterday made a weird noise on crank sounded like something was struggling. And the yellow dash light flashes for a second. (Used to be every time with old alternator)

I suspect the starter may be next in line

Would I check it with an ammeter as I did previously (cue Pete k)

Or would there be another way to check the starters condition / draw / fault

I’ve read somewhere it should produce 150 amps - so presuming there’s a differing way to use the multimeter?

Thaanks as always

Are you using the car everyday ?

I recall there was 150ma being used for the 2nd battery split charge unit.
If you aren’t using the car as a work horse in winter I would disconnect the split charge wire from main batt and see if things improve.

And also consider disconnecting 2nd battery so it will remain charged for when you really need it! And maintain its life

Use it daily yes

Ok I’ll disconnect the split charge for a few days see how goes cheers

Main battery is ok yes I did buy a new one but went back to my old one since realising it wasn’t the fault and the old one is a better quality

And thanks I’ll give it a go leaving the split charge undone for a little while first and see

If not I’ll come to you for the starter!!

Thanks again as always everyone
Have a good weekend

Cheers flapper

I’ve read that thread previously - so my gap iid will read the starter rpm is that correct?

My car takes 2-3 seconds to crank first thing in morning…

You need to charge the battery before trying the test.
If battery low, rpm could be low !

Way to long put your iid into live values then search for engine rpm then whatch the iid and start the car the iid tool should read about 250 rpm. The graph is good but a faff to get right. mine was 100 rpm so got bg landrovers to change it for the new style disco4 starter and wow starts in less than a second starting rpm is 280 rpm
Also check the earth cable under driverside wheal arch get a jump lead off the earth on the battery and stick it on the gear box or engine or earth under the wheel arch if it starts quicker its a dodge earth if no change new starter.
