well there is a starter relay in the fusebox next to the battery
The starter relay is marked SM on the chart.

Hit it with a screwdriver handle or swap it with another and see if it starts.

Could be earth wire to engine. Try a jumper from the neg terminal to the engine and see if it will start

FWIW my thoughts include:

Battery
Earth strap
Starter
Relay

Even for someone of my limited mechanical ability a set of jump leads and a multimeter should enable you to determine if any of these are the issue without too much hassle.

bigbill110 - A few helpful posts there, have you made any progress in diagnosing or fixing the problem?

Good luck.

Well the next thing I would do is remove relay and bridge contacts to prove starter works or not. (Ensure you are in neutral)
However if you get the wrong contacts you could do serious damage, so be sure you know what you are doing before you try that.

Other thing you could do

Put your finger on top of the relay while someone cranks the key all the way round and see if you feel a click on that relay. Put relay in and out while key held in crank to be sure.

Or put a test light into the relay contacts base, crank the key

Well if you are under the car :

Check the thick starter cable has 12v on it. (There is a bolt in fuse inline with the battery terminal)
With the car in neutral. Very important if you are under it and messing around on a 4wd car, apply power to the small starter wire. You could use a large flat blade screw driver to bridge the gap. See if starter makes a noise or works or sparks a little.

If the fuse in the battery terminal has gone, the cable can rub on the front diff right at the front of the car.

Probably not a problem with the thick starter cable actually, as the starter should still click/clunk (if fuse in fusebox ok)

Small possibility could be engine ground as some have said above

As a number of us have already said, check the earth strap - it is a very common issue with the D4 and becoming one with the D3

Run a jump lead from the negative on the battery to clean metal on the engine or, preferably, the negative terminal on the starter. Then try and start as per usual.

It’s n the black plastic box, hanging off the battery + terminal. At the bottom.

See loom here

If it has gone , see if cable rubbed through under the car at the front
