How old are they? I never run winter tyres more than four, five tops, seasons as the rubber hardens. Tread or no tread, I find that age is just as big a factor after driving 20+ seasons on snow.

Minimum tread depth is 1.6mm for summer or 3mm for winter.
I would change them now, they are after all the only things that keep your car attached to the road.

Approx. 3mm is the point when I change.
If it’s in the summer I might go a little lower, but always by 2.5mm
Pirelli ATR’s were still performing well at that level. If they hadn’t been, I’d have changed them sooner.
Currently running GG AT3’s and anticipate they’ll need to be changed earlier from what I’ve read.

Excellent point!
I put them on summer 2017 and they have done at least a score of trips.
I think best change them out a bit early based on helpful comments.

I used to replace mine at 4mm. I took the view that anything less and you lost the advantage of the tread. Mind you I would still see over 30,000 miles out of them. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

The AT+, like the Grabber AT3, are winter rated. Winter tyres are recommended to be changed at 4mm of remaining tread depth in order to maintain winter performance. They have a 4mm wear marker for this reason.
As Moo says, taking an AT down to the legal limit means you lose the benefit of the blockier tread when off road.
When my rear dampers are replaced next week, it's my intention to fit new tyres. I was thinking of fitting a fresh set of AT+ but Pirelli have done their usual thing of deciding to not supply 255/55/19 to the UK. Whilst they can still be found here and there, the risk of not being able to find some should I need a new tyre e.g. a non-repairable puncture, means I'll likely go back to the GG AT3. I just put on new duratrac a month or so back and noticed huge difference when hitting standing water. Still probably years life left if taken down to legal limit but not worth going that. Did just over 55k on them
With all this crazy weather and the state of our roads I'd say change sonner rather than later. Discovery 4 HSE Montalcino Red

If the recommendation for winter tyres is 4mm what is the recommendation for normal road tyres in winter? It can when others can't,

The legal limit is as stated above (1.6mm ?). However, most people would agree that it is prudent to replace them before then.
Exactly when is down to the individual and also how the tyres are performing.
As per my previous post, I typically change when the tread is around 3mm. I definitely never go below 2.5mm 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
