Stuck in snow!

Really horrible downfall of snow here, some 35-40 cm! I have this little hill, not steep but always slippery and now its draped in about 35 cm of snow and the car wont manage! I used the Low setting but no luck, its a sort of powdery snow so its difficult!

Anybody any tips or something?? cheers!

If there's ice underneath the powdery snow you'll struggle regardless.

Although studded tyres should get you going. Assuming you don't have them or even winter tyres, I'm afraid I think you'll need chains or similar. Low range and select grass, gravel, snow on the TR.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Wow. I’m surprised studded tyres didn’t get you going.

I wonder if everything is working as it should be?

You won’t get anywhere in low range, high range mud and snow with as little right peddle as possible, in mud and snow first gear is not available, you will be starting in second, tyres and weight make little difference on a base of ice, I once slid over 100 yards backwards down hill with a tractor when moving snow Shocked

Good point about not using low range. Thumbs Up

You don’t say which model you’ve got!- but use off-road height if it is not automatically changed. Thumbs Up

Lower your tyre pressures to 10 psi and you'll never need traction control again

So when do you use "Low"?? is that just for towing or something?

Mainly off road, starting off on an incline when towing heavy loads, it can be used anytime, not recommended on motorways Laughing
If you’ve been trying to use it in snow particularly when starting off you will be disappointed and get nowhere. With a D4 you can change up ratios at up to 40mph, very useful when towing heavy loads in hilly terrain.

Not recommended for motorways though must admit, due to good sound proofing, I have pulled into a dual carriageway in low box and only realised when getting to 45mph and wondering why I've stopped speeding up..

That situation really makes you appreciate the low to high "any speed" transfer case.

Here's my two penneth for what it's worth...

I recently took my D3 to an off-road centre to learn about what it can do and to learn a bit about off-road driving. Lots of interesting stuff but one that really surprised me was when I got the car stuck in deep mud.

I was low range, mud-ruts mode, 3rd gear selected using sports-shift (which is basically 1st gear in long range). The car wouldn't shift so I basically expected the staff to have to get something to pull me out. Anyway, the guy told me to turn off DSC and give it way more beans on the throttle. He explained that the car really needed to pick up on the wheel slip to make the TC work more effectively (it brakes each individual wheel to send power to the opposite side of the axle etc). I followed the instructions and was basically 80+ % throttle and the wheels were spinning away (I thought it was a waste of time) but low and behold the car started working it all out and it pulled me out of a deep mess.

It was a really good learning moment and quite impressive...I've uploaded it to my YouTube channel here (the 1st time I've ever uploaded a vid too lol)
