Should I get D4?

Being a novice to LR, reading so many horror story about crank shaft, I wonder if I should get Discovery Sport SD4 rather than a Disco4 SDV6. But my wife and I love Disco4 so much; love its boxy and off-road look, also the practicality.
We did a lot of long trips with kids with E-Class Estate across the country. Love how it drives on highway, but cannot handle the city and country road very well, so would like a SUV. Some said LR4 last batch would be better. I puzzle…..

All makes of cars have various issues, if you like the D4 and have driven one you won’t be happy with anything else Cool

If you buy get as late a model as you can (late 2015 onwards) as it will be Euro 6… and make sure it has a good/full service history and a good warranty… the rest is down to luck (or lack of it)..
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Hi,

you mostly only regret the things you dont do (or dont buy)
if you want one, buy one, enjoy it, dont stress about things that "Might" happen
(there's lots of other things that can go wrong Laughing )
as said ^ all cars have there problems and a DS is not a D4 you could get a FL2 instead of DS.

Thumbs Up

From several friends experience the DS 2l will have as many if not more engine issues .One of them has had 3 engines fitted .
Speaking as somebody who has had a D4 crank go , JLR will look after you as long as all your ducks are in a row . If your somebody who will worry about it dont buy any JLR vehicle full stop they have a well deserved reputation ,sad thing is nothing does the same job!! Just be aware of the worst case scenario.

Frankly, I did think of XC90, Rav4 and Land Cruiser. But I would think, let’s try my luck on D4 and see if I can get one without too many problems. If that’s not working, change to those Laughing

I'm on my third D4, lost my first one to an £18k engine bill from crankshaft failure, it didn't put me off the model but taught me never to have one without full LR history and a LR warranty. I'd say buying at the cheaper end without both of those elements is a big risk unless you have a huge slush fund 'just in case'.

The cost of the cam belt and fuel belt service is £1090 inc vat, this also includes an oil and filter
change, pollen filter and the normal health check

I'm happy with that Thumbs Up

Not that expensive when a 2016 polo 1.4tdi timing belt (inc waterpump) & minor service cost £712 at an indy using genuine parts!

I made the expensive mistake of trading in my old D3 for a Discovery Sport. 6 months later I traded that in for a D4.

The sport is not a 4x4 - it is a car, and a very plasticky cheaply built one from my experience.

And if you are worried about horror stories, then just google "Discovery Sport oil dilution and DPF"

I always consider my full size Land Rovers to be part car and part tractor. They are a proper 4X4, so there's a lot more to them than a regular two wheel or AWD drive car.

Plus they are heavy, so components wear out faster. Also, bear in mind that the youngest D4 will be 7 years old this year.

If you appreciate this and can afford it, you'll be rewarded with a "permagrin" every time you drive it.

Thanks for all advice. Placed deposit for a 2016 Landmark from a JLR dealer. Waiting for preparation and collection. Wish the car is strong and healthy!
