Stormers coming off tomorrow |
|
Hi All,
I will be changing back to my 19s after purchasing a trolley jack this morning. As the car is still under warranty I want to leave everything as it should be in case i need a few bits doing. I will put them back on once warranty is up. Googsy

No very serious. After chatting with Barryg car just seems too jiggly as if bushings or tracking is not right. As Barry said I will probably need to get dealer to sort if its still an issue when I put 19s back on. If I went to them with Stormers they might say fault is down to having non standard tyres. Warranty is not out until August. But as I do a lot of driving up and down the 19s made the car more refined and much smoother. I think after comments from both yourself and Barry somethings not right balancing tracking or lower steering column issue.
A sad day indeed Googsy

had mine on now for over 40k miles.
no problems with steering bushes etc
even passed it's mot a few weeks ago.
but yep, if you're having trouble down below, take them off.
the 20's may not be the cause of any issues.
but your dealer will use it as the excuse to opt out of repair under warranty ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

my sixpenoworth. I agree with Googsy. I'm now on my second set of 20's. OK, first set had cheap and nasty Nexen Roadian 275/45 tyres, so I put the nervous ride down to these, but after a week of motorway mileage with the 295/45 Grabbers, its better (by far), but not as refined as it was with the 255/55x19's. Its a strange mixture of being pulled by road contours (as you've more tread on the road), and a bit of vibe from greater unsprung weight (not wheel balance, as I've had them done twice, and they're spot on). I've been well into 3 figure speed, and its OK, it is just ride "comfort". I still have my 19's, so will see in a week or so how I feel.

Not sure if it's the same with the D3, but there was an updated / dampened steering rack issued for the RRS, as part of a TSB, to solve a shake or shimmy in the steering as you drive.
When I put the Stormers on my sport, I got the shimmy in the steering wheel, which I didn’t have with the original 18’s.
So I got the new rack fitted & the shimmy went away resulting in a perfectly stable drive.
Maybe, as I say this replacement rack is not applicable to the D3, but it might be worth looking into.

How much Clearence have you got ?? Duncan

I had this issue when I first put the Stormers on the Sport.
Originally I had fitted 295/45 Pirelli’s for better ride comfort, but had to take them off the next day as the front tyres were rubbing the suspension !!!!
Apparently copy Stormers have a greater offset than the LR rims, thereby allowing the wider / higher tyre to be fitted.
Definitely something to be very careful of

I've got 295/45x20's on VSpoke copies, which have 50mm offset. Standard LR have 53mm. (in this case, lower offset = more clearence as it move the wheel outwards). With a 295 tyre, I've about 10mm clearence to the suspension upright. RonP has Stormer copies with 53mm offset with the same tyres as me, which are also clearing OK.
RRS and D3 have what looks like the same suspension setup, but the componants are actually different.

Are you sure that's the case Al?
yours are 50mm, mine are 53mm
but I've got more clearance than you?

Ron - in theory, yes, lower offset (the distance the the centerline of the rim to the hub face), means the wheel moves outwards in relation to the hubface. We only talking 3mm, so I would guess our clearence is actually about the same.

I have 275/40/20's on, went in for service and they changed the two front wisbone thingy's and 4 wheel alignment under warranty. Nada was said about hte 20's. Have to say 40 profile is not ideal, can't even go up a gutter!
See ya can get 285/55/20 in BFG All terrains.Had these before and thery're a great tyre.
Reckon you'd fit em in?
Seems 31.5 is ok from searching
285/55/20 = 32.3
