MY14 D4 SDV8 Extended Wheelbase Dual Cab Ute/Pick Up build

G'day Guys,

I'm building a MY14 D4 SDV8 Extended Wheelbase Dual Cab Ute/Pick Up build here in Sydney, Australia.

I have sourced a donor 2015 D4 SDV6 with a spun bearing motor, so looking to source the following;

Ideally a 4.4 SDV8 engine and 8 speed gearbox from L322 (lowest mileage) complete with all ancillaries and engine harness Turbos, A/C compressor, power steering pump, alternator, etc

Radiator pack from SDV8 4.4 L322; radiator, a/c condenser, intercooler, shroud, etc

Engine mounts from SDV8 4.4 L322

What do you have?

The L320 RRS was based on the L319 and shares its engine bay, but the L322 is a completely unrelated beast. While the old 3.6 TDV8 will fit in the engine bay and was available on the L320, the newer 4.4 does not.

If you want a V8, the 5.0 NA petrol was available on the D4 in some markets and the 5.0SC was available on the L320; post-facelift the D4 was offered with the 3.0 V6 SC which is the V8 block with two cylinders blanked off, so the petrol V8 in NA or SC form should be doable.

If you've got the MY14, that should have the ZF 8-speed box which you want to keep if it's still working as it is a vast improvement on the older 6-speeder, it also has electronic controls rather than the mechanical controls of the 6, so is already integrated into your car without major electronics changes. It's also the same box used in the L405 and L494 RR/RRS, so a reputable specialist should be able to perform a firmware update to support any engine that was used in either of those applications.

Thanks for your input, however we do know how to fit the 4.4 SDV8 into the L319 - it has been done already.

I will be using a Radiator/AC/Intercooler pack form the L322, the gearbox mounts stay in the same place (yes my MY14 is an update with 8 Speed ZF already) and a modified engine mount on one side and standard on the other.

We will be putting custom tunes into both the SDV8 and ZF 8 Speed as its being build.

The donor car is a mid spec car with a few accessories already but will be upgrading the Meridian Stereo to the high spec one, installing Android Auto / Apple Carplay, installing a cold climate pack and a rear E-diff while the body is off being shortened into a dual cab and extending the chassis by 900mm so we can have a 2100mm alloy tray

I'll keep a post once we get it underway!

This will be an absolute game changer if the 4.4 fits!

It’s the engine option the D4 should have had. Maybe values would be similar to the Landcruiser Amazon then.

I’ve clocked a fair few D3s and D4s on my present travels around Sydney, will keep my eyes open for a white stretched Ute type when we get back towards back end of May. Thumbs Up
