If that's a genuine RS500, it's a rare beasty - they made fewer than 60 white RS500s. Shame he won't be able to drive it for a while...

It still surprises me that they left the factory with only 224BHP, which by today's standards is 'Meh'.

And it was a time when hot hatches had around 130bhp. The Porsche 944 was making less power until they put the 2.5 turbo unit in it - even the 3.0 S2 was only making similar power to the Sierra at the time. And the non-turbo 911s at the time weren't much better.

It's also worth remembering that the RS500 was only about 1200kg - compare that to a modern Golf at 1300-1400kg.

My UR Quattro only had 200bhp, yet was classed as a super car back in 1981, and my rallycross TR8 had a massive 300bhp in 1985.

My wifes previous car, a 2015 1.4 litre A3 had 150bhp, and now 'our' RS Q3 has 310bhp, how times have changed.

my 1979 Dolomite Sprint boasted a massive 127BHP ... but there weren't many cars at the time that could keep up with it unless you spent a whole lot more money.

It was easily capable of 65+mph in a 30 zone. Says so on my licence. Laughing

My ten year later 309GTi had 130bhp and was great fun "making progress" across country. Had excellent feel from the power steering, brakes were decent for the time. I still miss that car when I happen upon a decent bit of twisty road.

It still is weird when I think about the power they had but as said it was a while ago. My Focus is now up to 280bhp and there is one guy on a Focus group I’m in that is running 660bhp at the wheels and front wheels only at that.

You would think so but a combination of an lsd and Syvecs ecu means it’s mapped to make the most of the power. Very progressive power delivery. You can 4wd these but the hits are becoming harder to come across as less and less Volvo’s left on the road with the bits needed. It’s the mk2 Focus with the 5 pot Volvo engine.
