How long do alternators last?

Graphite 2016 90,000 miles

Looking ahead and hoping to swerve any calls from SWMBO - 'there's a light on the dash'.
How many miles before alternators starts giving trouble?
Mileage is two thirds motorway, one third town but this doesnt really matter....

The same length as a piece of string Laughing what is the light?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I'm thinking they are just bushes and bearings. The way the driver drives makes little difference. If people say they generally last 100,000 miles before trouble I will be out there this weekend.
But if peeps say very approx 200,000 then this weekend I will be sat on the sofa in me pants doin xbox as planned...

Nope, they are not… there are brushes, a collector and a “transsistor” involved…

Basically they are the real wearing points… Water and dirt can speed up wear.

But normally an alternator from denso do a lot of miles before significantly wear occurs

But another issue, can speed up or cause transistor/regulator wear/damage.
 Best regards
Harold

It’s the diodes that fail. Sometime in the first 500,000 miles usually. Does that help?

My D3’s original alternator got changed at 97k.
The replacement failed at 180k.

So on that sample.
You have 7k of life.
Or it’s died 7k ago and hasn’t had the heart to tell you.

Died around 35,000 miles. Must be just about ready to go as now at 77000 miles.although the first alternator lasted 5 years present one going strong at 12 years on. Probably die on me when I’m miles from nowhere somewhere on the west coast on holiday ( in the pouring rain)!

AJM

Just a thought. I’m in Lanark and after 17 years of ownership I probably have a fair collection of bit and piece not to mention tools for the beast. Even have an Autel 200 that appears to work. So if you get stuck on anything give me a shout. Todays project replace the key fog casing.

Could do with a local welder to give the sills and back arches some attention.
