Hi, I have searched the forum and internet and came across a few different opinions and answers. So looking for some clarification please. I have just recently bought a discovery 4 2013 plate. There is no towbar so I am fitting a towbar and the electrics. I have looked and found videos on how to do this but my question is “ does the landrover then need reprogrammed to tell it there is a towbar and electrics fitted?” As I have read the rear parking sensors need to know when a trailer is on? Please help? Thanks.

To get the best out of it yes, providing it hasn’t already been done, mine had(factory), it not only disables the rear sensors when trailer electrics are plugged in it also disables high and low automatic suspension settings etc providing you are using a genuine LR D3 or D4 cable adaptor, both will fit. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Just take extra care threading the cable behind the swinging damper weights, if not done correctly they can damage the cable when swinging It can when others can't,

Make sure you get the ones for a D4 as the D3 has an ever so slightly different fitting... ask me how I know ! about a 20 minute job once you've done it a few times! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Honestly fit 13 pin as its the up to date standard and put a new plug on the caravan if you have twin electrics .No need for adapter cables etc.

Depends what’s on the trailer(s) you are towing.
iam2103: Ebay is cheapest but you may need to be patient, otherwise any good LR factor such as Rimmer Bros, Lincs or Paddock Motors, Matlock. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Think I have a wiring kit in the garage somewhere, needs a new socket (13 pin) but otherwise good to go, doesn't come with a wiring diagram though so you'd need to figure out the wire colours and pin numbers... yours for £50 if you want it.. I ran out of time/patience and it was just too cold to be outside trying to wire the thing up in mid January when i needed the trailer.
Drop me a pm if interested.. I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Trailer is easier and cheaper to change . 13 pin is standard today so all trailers from factory are 13pin unless specified otherwise.

Hi I have been looking into this, can anyone help with the part number I need for a d4 63 plate. Is it possible to have the 7 pin and 13 pin sockets? If not does anyone know the part number for the 13 pin electrics. Thanks.

As said here, the basics work but the auto functions do not. This isn't a major issue but can sometimes be annoying. Depends on if you want to fork out to have all functions working on auto or are happy to ignore the rear parking sensors and switch them off by hand when in reverse with a trailer in tow. A few quid in fact.

What do you want the 7 pin for is it the twin 7 pin for a caravan or is it just a 7 pin for a trailer.
If the 7 pin for a trailer then fit the 13 pin electrics to car for future proofing and then buy the cheap plug that plugs into a 13 pin and converts it to 7 pin
If it’s a twin 7 pin for caravan go for the 13 pin on the car and then buy the more expensive adaptor to turn the 13 pin into the twin 7 pin for a caravan. This will make the car future proof but also allow the caravan to be towed MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
