New 20" minefield

Just looking at the minefield of 4 new tyres on my 65 plate D4 Lux.

It's got Standard Scorpion Zeros on it at the moment, which to be fair have done everything I've asked of them since I brought the car last December.

But, I've not launched my boat on a slippery slipway this year, haven't been in any mud, and we've not had snow.
I live in an area where we get a lot of snow compared to the rest of the South coast due to the topography, and I live at the bottom end of a Cul-de-sac on a steep hill.
When it snows I often tow some of the neighbours to the top of the hill so they can get out.
It would be very embarrassing being the only LR owner in the road and not to be able to get out.

I ended up on Goodyear Wranglers on my D3 with 19" wheels, which were great, but I don't think they are available in 255/50/20. I liked the GG ATs I had but found they wore badly.
I don't really want the expense of buying a set of 19" wheels, and would prefer to stick to the standard size.

It's giving me a headache just thinking about it.

Are the standard scorpion Zeros really that bad?
I only had them on my D3 for about a month in the Spring.

After a short Google.

Does anyone have any comparative experience between the Scorpion Verde and Scorpion Zero All Season.

The All Season would appear to cope with Snow, but would also work on Slippery slipways.

Or of course any other suggestions.

I have Scorpion Verde All Season PNCS in 285/40x22 on the D5. I've now done 24k miles and still have 6mm tread, so wearing really well, and whilst not had any snow to try them in, have pulled the caravan across wet grass without any wheelspin, so seem a decent enough tyre to me.

SCORPIONā„¢ ALL TERRAIN PLUS is availible in 255/50x20

Think you will find Goodyear wranglers in the size 255 55 20

slightly oversize, but will fit no problem and give a better ride quality, more like 19's.. Put my speedo virtually spot on, but still slightly under

Just remember your overall height will be slightly more, so look out in car parks etc about 0.7cm from memory

Thanks

Probably not a helpful comment, but a LR4 I'm looking at buying (maybe - if the price wasn't insane) has Nitto Terra Grapplers fitted to it's 20" wheels. I googled them and they get good reviews albeit that they may have an offroad bais. They're quite well priced in the US and may be available in the UK.

Moo had put a thread up recently on Avon AX7

https://www.disco4.com/forum/great-new-tyre-avon-ax7-190138.html

Owned by Cooper, they should be a decent AT tyre at a reasonable price.

Edited to add: oops, think 19" is max size.

I make it 12.5 mm. Could lower the normal height using iiD if it's that critical.

Yep, had looked at the Avons until I realised they didn't go up to 20s.

The Verde AS looks interesting on paper, but to me the tread pattern just looks like a road tyre, and it sort of goes against the grain to expect it to perform anywhere other than that, but they do get good reviews.

I might have to investigate looking at some 19" wheels.

I saw a Loire blue on grey D3HSE alloys on here and it looked pretty good!

Those and the Graphite Edition 19s are great looking alloys, if I didn't have landmarks on mine its what I would go for!

I've wanted to go with Black or Gunmetal wheels since I brought the D4.
I've already fitted black side vents and blacked out most of the grill.

Might spend a bit of time on EBAY later, as it does appear 19's would be a great help with tyre choice.

The Scorpion All Terain Plus (the link I posted) look a bit more agressive than standard road tyres, as they replace the ATR, and come in 20"s

Thanks Al, unfortunately they look a bit more aggressive than I really need.

Think I'll be spending some time on the web over the weekend.

Thanks to all the advise here, I need to really consider:
19" wheels
Going up to 55% Aspect ratio 20" tyres
Sticking with std size

The AT+ is not in normal Disco sizes, however. 275/55/20 and 275/60/20 only, according to Pirelli's website.

If you do go up to 55% then the Grabber AT3 would seem a good choice. Not too aggressive, winter rated and decent off road performance so long as you're not in gloopy mud (but then not much does).
