LR4 5.0 - Long Crank, now Crank no start / no spark

Good afternoon!

This issue has me and some indie shops stumped. I will try and be as brief as possible!

Issue began as a long crank (strong crank, but would take longer and longer). Long crank progressively became more frequent until nearly every startup would yield long cranking times.

If engine was shut off and then immediately restarted it would start up normal.

skip forward a few months, finally after long crank the engine started, then died a minute later and now cranks and cranks with no start.

Occasionally while driving the voltage would begin to drop to the low 12s and even occasionally 11.9v while engine was running, which would cause the engine to begin running rough. After restarting voltage would jump back up to normal 13.5/14 depending on outside temperature. No charging system faults.

If I left the engine running poorly at low voltage for a few minutes I would eventually feel the alternator kick on and voltage back up to normal and running fine.

Confirmed no spark, fuel pressure and delivery is good.

Items addressed/changed so far:
- Replaced CPS twice (correctly installed, wiring checked)
- Replaced spark plugs
- Checked main and auxiliary timing
- LPFP and HPFP checked good
- Replaced battery multiple times AGM/Non-AGM
- Alternator checked
- Compression checked, great on all 8 cylinders
- BMS TSB completed (moving wire from battery to fuse box)

Neither of the above issues yielded any fault codes until the engine shut off the final time. This time there was a misfire code for all 8 cylinders, as well as:

P0351-13 - Ignition coil A primary/secondary circuit
P0352-13 - Ignition coil B primary/secondary circuit
P0353-13 - Ignition coil C primary/secondary circuit
P0354-13 - Ignition coil D primary/secondary circuit
P0355-13 - Ignition coil E primary/secondary circuit
P0356-13 - Ignition coil F primary/secondary circuit
P0357-13 - Ignition coil G primary/secondary circuit
P0358-13 - Ignition coil H primary/secondary circuit

I've been chasing down ground wires and trying to work backwards from the coils...

Would love any insight or past experiences to help guide my diagnostic journey Smile

Thank you,

Adrien

Do you have an IID tool so you can trend sensors? If not try getting one so you can do so. Then start following a logical diagnosis. Don't know anything about the V8 petrols, but I would be down loading the LR manual and reading up on the engine - then combine symptoms and engine knowledge to arrive at things to check.

Don't have an IID tool yet, but this might be my sign to get one..

Have done as much tracing as possible using all available manuals and wiring diagrams, will keep at it!

Cheers!

Plus 1 ref a gap iid

Out of curiosity I wonder if the basic Autel AP200 ( white ) would be of assistance in reading the codes / live data etc , ie, when it’s plugged in and moving the looms/ connections if the live data would change ?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Autel-Bluetooth-S...T1PC5?th=1

Also found this ref the first code

https://www.repairsmith.com/blog/p0351/

Hope it may also be of use to u and ur able to find the error

Those wiring diagrams are fantastic!! I think I have a few of them but all very poor quality, the ones you've sent are amazing.

Many many thanks for the materials and for taking the time Smile

Have you considered a short subscription to the LR 'TOPIXS' website - you will be able to down load a specific workshop manual & wiring diagram for your car. All the info that LR give out to dealers. However note that you have to down load in short 5 - 15 page sections and the manual is 1000's long... However it is worth it's weight in gold. I did this for my D3 and printed it (at work!) - a 2 foot stack of paper! Would not be with out it - if no other reason for looking up fault codes and the LR suggested investigation.

If you do get a fault code reader there are multiple options. From what I know the more generic devices give higher level codes, i.e. the last digit is missing. This means that might be looking at up to 10 possible codes in the the LR manual. The more LR specific readers give the last digit (IID does, other might as well - do your research).
I'd also want a device that allows you to data log sensor outputs. Allows you to investigate relevant sensors based on the code to see what is plausible. Don't forget that codes are not infallible - the code thrown up could be a symptom rather than a cause.

Good luck & let us know what you find.

Adrian
