Warning lights and Limp mode - VDC module comms issue

Hi All,

I have been trying to resolve this issue for 4 days now and am starting to run out of ideas. Let me explain the situation:

Vehicle is a MY08 D3 TDV6.
Issue was first noticed when I started to drive and then got a series of bings and warning lights; the classic HDC unnavailable, suspension lowering, transmission showing"F", ABS light, park brake light.

Clearing the faults with my IIDTool does not work and the faults come back straight away. Only if i leave the battery disconnected for a period of time am I able to clear the faults. But then when I try to drive again and pickup speed the errors return once again (I have noticed the speedo not working).

Faults are as follows:

Airbag

U0122-87 - Lost communication with vehicle dynamics control module - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message (AB)
( on 09-06-2023 10:02:56 at 214050 km )

Engine TDV6

U0416-00 - Invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module (2B)

Instrument Pack

U0184-87 - Lost communication with audio unit - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message (2B)

Parking Brake

Steering Angle

Suspension

B1B75-00 - Front foot-face mode stepper actuator (2A)

B1B76-00 - Front left air blend stepper actuator (2B)
( on 09-06-2023 09:46:52 at 214050 km )

B1B77-00 - Front right air blend stepper actuator (2B)
( on 09-06-2023 09:46:52 at 214050 km )

B1B82-00 - Rear air distribution stepper actuator (2A)
( on 09-06-2023 09:46:52 at 214050 km )

B1B83-00 - Rear air blend stepper actuator (2B)
( on 09-06-2023 09:46:52 at 214050 km )

So far i have tried the following:

- Recharge battery (is 2.5 years old)
- Replace brake light switch with genuine.
- Checked rear brake globes (appear to work fine).
- Cleaned wheel speed sensors.
- Checked Transfer case module connectors.
- Checked ABS module connectors.
- Checked wiring harness near ABS module, wheel speed sensor wires.
- Re-calibrated steering wheel angle sensor.

I think that is about it. I am really starting to run out of ideas and now sure what to do next. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks.

update

Hi All,

My issue still is not resolved but I have kept working on it and reading some other posts on here that have been very helpful - thank you!

So, I ended up changing the ABS module as it seemed the "only" error i was getting was a loss of communications from the VDC module - I was wrong, this did not fix the issue unfortunately and I am still getting the exact same error state.

I decided to do some more diagnostic work with the multimeter and OBD port and have some interesting results which i am not quite sure how to decipher. Your help would be much appreciated in this respect.

To summarise the results I have used the same table another fellow member (onetwentie) created (thank you! and hope you don't mind me plagiarising it Smile )

From what I gather, it seems i have an earth issue? I will start checking through all the earths but would like to know if I am on the right track or if there are other tests i should do.

Thank you again.

Update

Hi All,

Thought I would now post an update - appears my issue is now resolved; car is working fine and no warnings or fault codes. It seems like I had a loose earth, the one that ABS module connects to. I don't know how I missed it earlier but when I started looking at my earths after the multi-meter readings I got I found this one to be loose.

I checked the OBD pins again with multi-meter after cleaning and tightening earth and I still got the same low voltages (~0.8), so not sure what is going on there but will have to look at it a bit more.

Also, for the record, I installed a second hand ABS module from the wreckers and it is working fine without having to re-learn VIN etc. My vehicle is a MY08 and the replacement ABS module came from a similar age vehicle (VIN 139).

Hope this helps someone else who may face the same issues.

Cheers

Electrical and CANBUS errors would be the most frustrating to fault find on these vehicles, touch would i have only had self induced earthing errors so far.

Yep - very frustrating, it can just be so many things. That's why it really does pay to systematically go over things with multi-meter at OBD port - I had no idea how to do those diagnostic exercises before this happened to me, but there are some good threads on here with good info.

Hi

Great u made some progress

If it helps theres some earths behind the front passenger side wheel arch liner that the ECM and TCM uses for the ref voltage

Other places are the front drivers side wheel arch liner, behind the drivers side headlight etc

If u have a jump lead try using one of them going from ur battery earth post to the engine lifting bracket to see if it improves those readings

Enclosed a link of some pics I enclosed showing the earths

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic188138-120.html

Hope that helps

Ps, as urs is a 2008 , there should be other connections behind ur passenger side headlight
