Engine not turning over

Hi all,

Not posted for a while as the car has been pretty good, however...

Car was fine when last driven on Saturday. My wife then went to use it on Sunday and it wouldn't turn over at all. The battery seemed a little low (12.1V) so I put it on charge overnight but my CTEK still showed only half-charge in the morning.

Aha, I thought, the battery is 4+ years old. It must have failed. So, ordered a new one from Tayna and fitted it just now but the issue is the same (apart from me being £180 poorer!).

The ignition comes on, seat adjusts etc but there's just a faint click/clunk when operating the start button. No errors and an OBD2 reader shows no fault codes.

Any ideas what to check before I call on a local garage or the RAC?

Cheers,
Ade

Funnily enough, I just spotted this recent post that suggests the same:
https://disco4.com/forum/low-battery-warni...ight=start

Just tested with a jump start pack and the engine fires up when that's used (negative connected to engine), so I think you're probably right. I gather the place to check for corrosion is inside the driver's wheel arch, once the liner is removed.

Any ideas how easy / quick that is to remove and check? I'm reasonably handy with the tools but struggling for time (middle of house extension) so need to work out whether to try to fix it myself or see if the garage can fit it in...

Cheers,
Ade

Eeek! Thanks! I think I'll book it into my local LR indie. Need it fixed properly as I'm driving it to Germany in 3 weeks' time...

Just fit a new earth to the engine in the engine bay no need to go down behind the wheelarch mine was done two years ago as a temporary fix and never felt the need to complicate life.

I did wonder about that. I think the original cable links the engine, chassis and body, so presumably that works only if its broken at the engine end (ie if body to chassis is still fine).

I assume that's where mine has broken as it starts when an external battery pack is connected to the engine.

I’ve read that you can put in a temporary Earth connection, to test this, using a heavy duty jump start lead connected between battery negative and car bodywork.
Good luck.
