Is an AGM battery better?

I bought my D3 and it had a Halfords AGM battery fitted. However I managed to flatten it so bought a new cheap non-AGM one (Lion). I then charged the Halfords one and it seems to be holding a charge ok. Is the AGM one going to be better to re-install in the car or would that full discharge (just clicked when starting) have damaged it?

A discharge won’t kill a battery, as long as it’s charged back to full pretty much straight away. What kills batteries is a discharge followed by being left discharged and/or not fully recharged.

Poor quality chargers can also do more harm than good by charging the battery too fast and letting it get too hot.

That's good to know cheers - hopefully I've got a decent spare now then! Any thoughts on if the AGM version would offer any advantage in performance in a D3?

Yes it will, takes charge much faster very noticeable in winter and short journeys, they will not spill acid, they can even be used upside down Shocked as they where designed for lifeboats.
Only downside with a D3 the AGM only take charge current up to 14.5v, a D3 can charge for a short time after first start up at 15.5v in winter, but LR only supply and fit AGM batteries and there have been no known issues with the extra current.
Don’t forget the service position that allows the bonnet to be opened back to the screen, could save a rupture when lifting the battery Rolling with laughter
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
