Replaced clock spring, now the airbag warning light is on

As in the subject, changed the clock spring because I was having issues with the steering wheel buttons, now the airbag warning light is on, is it just a case of getting the fault code reset to get rid of the light? Anyone have any experience in this?

took the car to the local garage, fault code B0001-1A couldn't be reset (current resistance below threshold). Mechanic said that these cheap Chinese knock offs often have this issue, I have also read this elsewhere, so I'm going to get an original part from salvage and swap over.

It would appear you are going down one of the learning curves that has been covered many times before on here.

I think had you said you'd used a non-genuine Clock spring in your first post you'd have received a few comments.

I've been there, and done that.
I've also brought several used clock springs and always ended up changing them again after a few months when something stops working.

It's one of those items where it really does make sense to buy a new genuine part, then fit and forget it for 30K miles.
 Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

A new genuine part is a nice idea, but the cost is ridiculous! Don't suppose you know where I can get a new original for less than £100 do you?

I would expect a new clock spring to last a lot longer than 30k miles. Shocked

Try Rimmer bros, Lincoln and/or put a listing in the wanted section, if you don’t want heated S/W there are plenty about.Thumbs Up

Hi
I have just took a call from mechanic refusing to fit a used (genuine) clock spring I have sourced
Other works being carried out but they say they do not recommend as it could cause all sorts of problems - fault codes - set air bag off !! etc.

Any comments?

Looks like I will have to have a crack myself - didn't really want to as limited for time - off to France end of next week..

Nonsense, especially from a mechanic!

I'm not a mechanic and managed to do it, no problem, in 90 minutes, just make sure the battery has been disconnected. First one I fitted was a Chinese knock off, got an airbag warning. Second one I got from salvage, no airbag warning, all steering wheel controls now work. Very happy Very Happy

strange from the mechanic as have used for a while and generally trusted.
Has also ran D3/D4 & RR... so should know the crack
Have to give benefit of the doubt that he didn't realise the used clock spring I left him with was a genuine item rather than any old used knock off..

Ill be giving it a go then. Just need to find my make shift coat hanger for the air bag release..!

Straight forward job just need to take a few precautions, put the stearing wheel in the straight ahead position, wait until the park brake light has gone off and disconnect the battery before you start, not essential but it gives you confidence. When fitting the new clock spring make sure it is centralised, they are usually marked, compare it to a retractable tape measure if you pull it out to far it will snap. Don’t be afraid of the airbag it will not go off, just put it in a safe place away from any heat source.

I bought the clock spring off of a member who changed it our for a heated version - looks to have helpfully taped it in position but is there any top tip to know its correctly wound in position?

Yes, quite simply hand wind it from lock to lock and count the revolutions, then wind it back half the number of revs. and tape it in that position.

All sorted job done, no more air bag warning light - thanks again for the advice

To anyone else considering it really is pretty straightforward; not sure why this job made me nervous, suppose its the airbag factor
Main obstacle was the steering wheel bolt - took some serious full beans weight behind it and when it eventually went it gave such a loud crack I thought I'd sheared it or broke the bar !!

Couple of observations:
The used but genuine clock spring seemed to move a lot more freely than the aftermarket one it replaced. Maybe a reason the aftermarket one failed after a relatively short period

I decided to trust the position of the replacement as it was taped in position. Maybe a bit foolish not to verify but panned out ok
Also noticed the 'window' on the right had the yellow plastic section showing fully centred and taking up the whole window (this might be another indicator its in the right position...not sure on this but maybe another member can confirm...)
