Torque converter on its way out?

2008 D3, 2,7 TDV6, 273k.
Autobox oil replaced IAW Filo's method last year, after the previous owner had listened to LR and done nothing with it. I get a shuddering at approx 2000 RPM, stronger the higher load the engine is under. When driving along with the cruise control on, the RPM fluctuates between 50-80 RPM up and down. Quite possibly it does this the rest of the time, but it shows easily when the going is steady. The shudder is not so notable when engine and oil is cold.
My first thought was to put some Dr. Tranny in the box, too see how long it lasts with fingers crossed. Three things trouble me with this though. What Dr. Tranny actually DOES is something I can't quite grip. There are a lot of tales, and I'm a bit weary of the Snake Oil-factor. Secondly, will this camouflage other problems that might kill my autobox? And thirdly, the autobox also gives off a sort of metallic rattle when the throttle is eased off. What is this noise, and what causes/remedies it?

I would put the Dr T in. ZF even sold a similar product. Shudder guard?

It’s better to put the additive in than leave the revs fluctuating

Dr Tranny does one thing and one thing only, it makes the oil seals swell and form a temporary seal for around 8/10,000 miles. The cause of the seals to fail is wear on the gearbox input shaft, fitting a new/reconditioned TC is pointless without changing the input shaft and bushes, this is why reputable repairers will not just fit a new/recon TC without the gb being done. Thumbs Up

Yes, definitely not too keen on the fluctuations. Does fixing/replacing the input shaft require a complete overhaul of the gbox? Or can the shaft and accompanying seal be replaced when the TC is removed?

No, the shaft and seals can be replaced after removal of the tc.

Chucked a tube of Dr. Tranny in tonight, the TC is as smooth as new. Hopefully it'll last a year or so, to get the old bank account ready for some more serious work Big Cry Big Cry
