"Insufficient" power supply for electric ferries !
Red Funnel the Solent ferry operator are ordering three new vehicle ferries to replace its ageing fleet, but they will not be delivered until 2028 or 2029.
They will have diesel engines, even though battery-electric power is proven technology on ships, and electric ferries of similar size are in use in Scandinavia.
The company says that it would "very much like the ships to be powered by electricity", but there is "insufficient" power supply on the south coast to enable this.

All Sealink ferries had degaussing loops, etc., ready to be put to use. An EV ferry ain't goin' to cut the mustard when we send the UK armed forces (i.e., Kevin, Amjad and (if bail conditions allow), his brother Colin) to regain St Georgia. Or wherever.
The Solent has double the normal number of tides. There's a clue...

Red Funnel Rolling with laughter You can hide a lot with a monopoly.......
BUT they are not a monopoly - there's also Wightlink & Hovertravel.

Carved up.... Owned by?
Anyway Google is your friend. I for my sins have looked at a few RF projects over the last 25years so aware of their.......let say company's "efficiency"
Yes - Bob Seely the IoW MP has said that he is concerned about the sale of Red Jet 4, which will leave just 2 hi-speed vessels to operate a 2-boat timetable on the West Cowes-Southampton Red Jet service.
He has also said “I believe we should be concerned about the performance of both major cross-Solent ferry operators (Wightlink and Red Funnel)."
I agree, but this doesn't solve the lack of electricity in both Portsmouth & Southampton to allow EVs ("Electric Vessels") to replace the existing ICE vessels.
We need more tidal generated electricity & Rolls-Royce SMRs ("Small Modular Reactors") to ensure adequate & continuous supply.

I've just reserved a 1MW supply for a new development in Portsmouth..... how much is RF looking for?
Now I've had problems in Guildford a few years back where 800kva was lost and no longer available for a site but was soon found again. Computer typically say no....
