Restricted Performance and lots of smoke

Well the first real issue today with the just purchased D4 Big Cry Backing on my drive tonight after a short journey and got the restricted performance red triangle and lots of stinky smoke , Even the Mrs came out to ask what was wrong with it due to the smoke on the drive as I backed on, Hope it’s nothing too serious Rolling Eyes From what I’ve researched points to a number of things but not a lot mention the lots of smoke, Here’s clutching at straws for now hoping it’s not the manifold, Any other suggestions or possibility’s appreciated till I can get it looked at ,

Stinky smoke suggests turbo. At least when the turbos went on my old TDV8, the smoke was very stinky. Oh, and white/grey if memory serves.

What about the turbo oil drain pipe mod?
I don’t think it would cause that much smoke though

Could also be a (or some) failed injectors. What colour smoke is it? I failed an MOT last year, too much smoke at idle, local MOT garage twice pushed me to change the turbo but I took it elsewhere to get six new injectors (£££ ouch). That solved it perfectly. The smoke was poorly burnt diesel.

That's what I had - white smoke with a diesel smell to it. Basically poorly burnt fuel, because the injectors weren't creating a good quality vaporised plume. I used my GAP tool to see that the injector pressures were all over the place, hence insisting on those being replaced before anyone looked at the turbo.

The GAP tool earned its cost back in that one episode. Well worth buying one if you don't have one.

I'd buy a GAP tool. Sounds like it could save you a bob or two. Have a look on here and the other forums for ones for sale. Thumbs Up

That turbo drain problem can cause impressive amounts of smoke but only when you boot it on the dual carriageway. Not when footling about parking it in a driveway.

Managed to get the car to the mechanic today and after a bit of investigating and a plug on found this
Wires to the fan cut and taped up?? WHY ? The fan runs but this is the wires to the connector to the right of the fan as you’re looking into the car,I believe it’s power to kick the fan in faster whenever needed Why would this be cut and taped up? Only thing I could of was it’s been left off after maintenance and got caught in the fan but looks like a clean cut and didn’t tape it’s self up Rolling Eyes Fault codes read to a Exhaust Gas temperature sensor , Anyone shed any light on these 2 issues? As the car was a one owner and serviced by a reputable garage can’t understand the cutting of the wire to fan , Ordered parts to replace connections to fan and sensor Will see how it goes
