Breaking point reached ?

We all rant & rave at stuff, in particular the way drivers/owners/operators of anything that runs on our roads are looked on by various authorities (regardless of political affiliation) as cash cows, to be milked dry at each & every oportunity.

What I personally hate is that justification to these schemes is usually dressed up as "environmental" and not thinking it through properly.

Looking at the physical backlash against khans hated ULEZ cameras I'm thinking that collectivly we have reached breaking point and that all these authorities need to realise that enough is enough.
(I won't hold my breath though).

Mass discontent at policies can change them - see the poll tax, for example. But it never makes them go away - the poll tax just became the Council Tax.

The reality is that Governments sometimes have to make decisions and implement policies that the masses don't like - just as parents have to do things that their children hate them for. Populist policies are great vote winners but almost always sow the seeds for serious problems in the future.

Yes, easy to say when, for example, I don't live/drive in London that doesn't alter the fact that sometimes unpopular decisions can be correct decisions. And, yes, there will be decisions that have me ranting and shouting just as the ULEZ is doing to some in London.

While we're on the subject of protests against things we dislike, does anyone have particularly strong views for or against cured pork leg?

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Someone will be along shortly to say that the answer is to vote for a government that will bring back the 30mph limits and scrap ULEZ. Now that we have greater democracy and sovereignty. Wink Whistle

But did it? The 'Poll Tax' (aka Community Charge) was a per-capita flat-rate charge/tax which replaced domestic rates. The Poll Tax was replaced with the Council Tax - which is based on pretty much the same basis as the original domestic rates.

The Poll Tax (which I didn't have much of a problem with TBH, despite being relatively young and skint at that time) was a fundamental change to the system which was subsequently rejected by the masses, effectively leading to the reintroduction of the scheme it had previously replaced.

I can’t think why the combination of gammon and spinach seems appropriate for this thread. Wink

Perhaps Gammon and Leek would be more appropriate!

Pre Poll Tax we had Council Rates which were based on the value of a property.

In an effort to make it more fair to a single person living alone paying the same as multiple people living in a similar property it was changed to an "Occupancy Tax" (AKA Poll Tax).
The great unwashed were the main protesters as they universally disliked Thatcher anyway.

The so called Poll Tax was replaced by "Council Tax" which is based on the value of a property.

I thought that scrapping ULEZ would be a none starter, but read earlier this evening that Uncle Rushi has put back bans on new petrol/diesel cars & vans, gas boilers & a few other things.
Looks like he's getting a few things right.
