What is this ‘scam’?

Always steered clear of Facefart (facebook) and other new media platforms as my impression was it is inhabited by the brain dead ….. and now proved correct!

However, hearing that it’s a good place to sell stuff, I succumbed and posted a FS ad for my leather sofa.

Within a minute of posting I had interest from many potential buyers.
So started dialogue with the first one.
Ended up he wanted it, but couldn’t collect himself, so would be sending his son along to collect.
But he wouldn’t have the cash on him, so would I accept PayPal.
I said yes, as long as he covered off the commission element of the transaction.
I passed my PP detail and address for collection.
Got the reply “ok, one minute” …… then nothing!

A couple of hours later I then offered this out to the many others who had enquired and then had back at least another five responses of a similar nature …… needless to say I told them where to go!

So what do they hope to get out of this, as the sofa won’t be leaving my possession until I have the £notes in my hand or bank (hand only now) Question

Are they just trying to p!ss people off as they’ve nothing better to do with their defunct brain cells?
Or is there something much cleverer and more sinister at play, that I am indeed the numbskull?
...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

We've had similar including supposed screenshots to show its been paid but with no money in my account. This is then followed by abuse and threats saying they paid and either want the goods or and their money back. Rolling Eyes

I just don't see how this works unless there are enough gullible people out there. Confused

and sadly there are plenty of gullible people still out there despite all the publicity over all the various scams on all platforms.

The PayPal one seems to be quite common as I believe they can make the transaction so you see the money in your account but then reclaim the payment straight away once they have the goods.
Although there is quite a robust process to get your money back with Paypal AFAIK.

Facepalnt market place is inhabited by the dross from Fleebay.

Hi,

is there something about PP that if its "buying Goods" they can claim the money back later saying the goods where defective (something along those lines!) PP refund them back off you, even though they still have the item Shocked

if its Family Friends they can not, Martin has some details in the For Sale section about this.

Another vote for Cash and in low denominations as swmbo never lets me see the £50 Laughing

Thumbs Up

My mate always insists on a photo of the people that turn up to buy anything and also a pic of their car and plate. He tells them beforehand and if they don't agree, then he won't sell to them. It helps him weed out the scammers and those not serious enough.

Bit extreme but it works.

I just buy from real businesses that are well known. If one goes looking for "bargains" one risks being fleeced and/or promotes criminal behaviour against others (thefts, etc.).

Sure, there will be some good people using these services to sell things but they are a tiny signal in the overwhelming noise of criminality that exists therein.

So if you only buy from "real businesses" whatever that means then how would know?
