Engine Help please!
My first post here and a short story! My Daughter owns a 2013 Discovery 4, 3.0 with around 160,000 miles. She was planning a trip and used a small local garage to do a lubrication service, the following day an engine rattle was heard so she promptly returned it for advice,,,
And was told it’s going to be a £8,000 replacement engine as the big-ends have gone!,,, although I am a retired mechanic I’m unable to assist her,,,,
I’ve listened to the noise and it sounds like a timing chain / tensioner issue, so looking for advice here. She lives in Northamptonshire, Weedon, nr Daventry, although it runs I don’t think it should be driven far,,,
Any suggestions, advice please!,,, to get the vehicle fixed, using experienced repairers,,, I have a friend with a recovery truck who can deliver.
Thanks for your time and suggestions, on behalf of Ruth and myself, appreciated.

If it was all fine before the oil change (I assume that's what you mean) it is possibly more than coincidence that it failed the next day.
I think D4 and D3 have the same oil filter arrangement, it is possible to incorrectly install the oil filter, rendering it useless.
Others will confirm if that's the case or not.Richard

Richard, thanks for quick reply!,, can you please expand on the filter, how can it be fitted wrong?!,,,
Yes the car was fine and I agree with you totally, but because the garage had the car the following day it’s impossible to know what went on,,,,
My first thoughts were incorrect oil was used?? But really now it’s a case of fixing it,,, thanks again.

I've just looked up the oil filters for both D3 and D4, I think I'm wrong about the similarity. D3 has a locating peg on the filter that needs to be oriented correctly. Perhaps D4 doesn't have that.
I which case, I don't know.
Even if they used the wrong oil, I wouldn't have thought one day would damage the engine.Richard

These do have a small timing chain within the heads, between the cams.
So if your ear is good, work out which side.
Bit of a faff to get to them. Injectors out. Fuel rail off. Fuel rail bracket off. Passenger side requires more.
You’re doing quite well to put 160K on one of these engines. (Yeah ok there are ones out there with more. Blar blar)

I think there is nothing to be gained with this garage, not really looking for blame, just how to go from here, I realise something is seriously wrong, the owner couldn’t be contacted as he was too stressed to speak,,,,,
Then the final £8K replacement was his solution,,,,,

Thanks Richard, I agree totally,,,, I just can’t imagine how the rattle developed so quickly?? No dash light warnings and no dipstick doesn’t help me either,,,

Thanks for the reply, my Daughter is dyslexic and I will need to check it, maybe that was 60K?!,,, it sounds firmly towards the front and I would say midway up the engine,,, not really dominant from either side,,,, hope that helps. Thanks again.

I would get the belt tensioners checked out as they have a habit of failing. When was the front timing belt last changed ? It must be due a second one. If it were mine I would spin off the oil filter and check for any signs of swarf . This would put your mind at rest on two counts . Hopefully no swarth and also if they had actually carried out the service as paid to do . Very easily done without having to drain any oil. Is the oil level OK ? To be honest im not sure they have clue what their doing as the figure they quoted for a replacement is very much on the optimistic side .

Be very careful - many offering rebuild engines are
£8k sounds rather less than I would have expected.
Good luck.

Ok, thanks for the heads up,,,,,
