ABS pump noise when trying to start? Starting problems.
Hi All
I've been battling a starting problem for weeks which is getting worse, to the point now where I can't start it at all. It's a 2011 Disco 4 3.0 sdv6. At first I could jump start from a battery or other vehicle but that now has no effect.
I've now replaced:
Battery - worked for 2 days
Brake pedal switch - no difference (I do wonder if the replacement switch is a dud)
Part of earth lead. - It did look dodgy between chassis and body under the offside wheel arch
Starter motor. No difference.
The only noise when attempting to start - apart from the click of the starter relay when I have an assistant put their ear to it, is a vibration noise coming from the ABS pump under the bonnet, just in front of the driver (Right hand drive). It sounds like the starter trying to turn from the driver's seat but it isn't turning or attempting to turn at all.
Is it normal for the ABS pump to do what sounds like a pressurisation or test when ignition is turned on?
Have any of you guys any ideas?

So. Of course it may be the earth strap, driver's side. Body to chassis to..... what??
Anyone know where this earth strap goes after it tantalisingly disappears behind the suspension strut?!
And....how do you get to where it goes?

From below, remove the engine tray. You could try an earth bridge first by connecting a decent strong jump lead from the engine lifting eye to the chassis, but it must be a strong contact.
If the starter operates then you know it's an earth strap issue.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thank you. I'll give the jumping to chassis another shot tomorrow, once it stops raining! Maybe my contact points weren't strong enough previously.

So... I've tested the earth with a really good contact - nothing. All the rest of the car seems to function - just no start. The battery seems to lose a lot of voltage after each attempt of starting...
I've now fitted another new brake light switch - nothing.
What other systems are built in to stop the engine starting? The gear knob? Is that a possible fault? It rises and falls with each attempt.
To re-iterate:
New battery -
New brake switch
New starter motor
Partial new earth strap
All producing no effect.
Any ideas good disco folks?

Does your ABS pump buzz on start up?
As per the title. Does anyone's abs pump buzz when you start up? I realise that on a fully functioning Discovery you probably can't hear as the engine will have started. However on my non starting Discovery I can hear it loud and clear - on the second and then consecutive attempts to start.
Does your Disco make this noise?
Does anyone know what effect the ABS pump has on the syarting procedure?

Do you have any active fault codes?
Have you confirmed that the engine is possible to turn by hand?Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

FIXED!
Finally fixed this - I think...
The fault appears to have been a dodgy earth strap - perhaps in combination with a dodgy brake light switch.
However, the thing that held up the job was my very dodgy battery charger that never truly made the battery up to sufficient voltage. Having borrowed a good charger - it fired up straight away. Lesson learned.
