My knobs are sticky!
Hi there, weird problem and I cannot find anything in the forum.
My heater hot and cold knobs on both sides have gone sticky. It feels like it has had a sticky childs fingers on it. I cleaned them but they still feel quite tacky. It has been years since I had any chemical cleaning inside so if something affected them, it has been a long time in coming.
Anyone came across this before?

Mine did this when I had a D4, completely randomly one night and all of a sudden. Very strange.
I had to spend ages gently gleaning them with 'sticky stuff remover' and a non-lint cloth, eventually it all came off and they were left with quite a matt feel. it never happened again. I assume they have some kind of finish treatment on them that must just go funny with age?
Edit - just noticed yours is 2010. Mine was too, not sure if it was just certain MYsD4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

same here, happened today although it is the end of the indicator stalk in my 2011 D4 that has become sticky.

I need to mention that while bicarb will do the job, it is quite abrasive. This is ok on the mentioned knobs but if you use it on anything with white lettering, you risk removing the lettering.
Google search shows many different methods to remove the sticky coating, many of which will work but after cleaning this type of knob on many different Land Rover and Jaguar models, I have come to the conclusion that there is no readily available chemical that will dissolve the coating without also also damaging the plastic.
The coating needs to be rubbed or scraped off using a soft cloth wrapped around a plastic scraper and liberally coated with a lubricant. I have seen WD40 used as the lubricant but in my experience, a basic liquid hand cream is the best. Make-up removal wet wipes also work but do the same job as the cloth and hand cream.
The knobs on the Discovery can be popped off by carefully levering them off with plastic trim removal tool or anything with a flat end found in a cutlery drawer but care must be taken not to damage the surrounding area.2010 D4 TDV6

This is what I used. I had a liquid rather than a spray, can't see it making much difference.
Just have some good microfibre cloths ready, don't use anything paper or with lint as it will just stick to the control as you're cleaning itD4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

have to be careful with "sticky stuff remover" .... they are deffo not all the same.
We'd had a plastic bottle of one brand that had run out but had a nice nozzle end for applying the stuff. So I bought some more, but a different brand, and decanted it into the "useful" bottle. Thankfully, as I picked it up to put it away in the cupboard, I realised the stuff was melting the plastic ... so quickly got it back in it's original glass container !
Both did the same job and both smelled vile, but clearly not the same stuff.
so if you do resort to it, test on an inconspicuous area first !!

I have noticed quite a few examples of the anti-slip coatings used on a number of different devices that seems to decay and go tacky. I wondered is getting cold would do it as I took out a still packed as new Microsoft mouse from my garage store that had gone tacky.
The only option seems to be to completely remove the coating and take it back to the base plastic.A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Happens to things in warm places too. I suspect it's a moisture thing..

Seems to a common problem with these rubber coatings after time, I've a night sight, never seen the light of day, doing the same, all sticky. The clear soft plastic covers on crimp connectors do the same.
