Tyre checks… - lucky man ..or not

Lucky man…

Noticed on my last journey on my commute down the motorway that at 70 mph I had an incredibly slight flutter rather than a wheel wobble from the front of the car.. felt very slightly like a wheel balance issue.

Under 70 mph there was no issue whatsoever so the problem could almost be disregarded…
Fortunately got home and checked the car over and found this:

How lucky am I ?

Was mentioning it to a friend of my last night who owns an MOT garage… he stated he had a chap drive in last week with a Mercedes Sprinter who asked him to diagnose a slight rumble from tHe front of the van.
He found this:

He said it drove in and the driver was oblivious to the state of his vehicle..the tyre was still holding air as normal…wtf!

Censored Shocked Shocked Virtually beyond words! (Sprinter)

Lucky you checked yours, from the pic it seems like a nasty cut?
Would have let go at some point.

Yes… certainly a good job you found that!

As for the sprinter….. ridiculous. Some Censored people shouldn’t be on our roads.

Called into my usual tyre place for a puncture repair a couple of years ago and this guy rocks up in his sporty mercedes car saying he was getting some noise at speed on the motorway one tyre was down to the cords, two were as good as slicks and the other one was just about showing a tread pattern he seemed a bit put out when he was told he needed four tyres

Looks like your tire got a serious cut. Replace it immediately.

I feel like I had a near miss just recently too. My indy found one of my front tyres had cracked and bulged around a puncture repair. See photo. This is a Pirelli scorpion verde all season. Apparently my other tyres had some centre cracking too. I inspect my tyres , casually, quite regularly but just hadn't noticed any of it, and not noticeable when driving. Pressures also regularly checked (34psi on front) .All replaced. Tyres were 5 years old ( how time flies!)
Given this I do wonder if tyres should be replaced rather than a puncture repaired.

In the caravan world the advice is to replace tyres every five years. Not that most caravans do much mileage in five years!
