Black one is for basic trailer lighting, in fact many trailers still use that type of plug.
White is for habitation services, charging the battery, power the fridge (only with engine running) and the fog light feed that is missing from the Black socket.
You can get a "Y" lead to combine the two into one.
In principle if you are mostly towing a 13 pin caravan you ought to get it converted as the pins don't corrode as much. In practice the twist action 13 pin are a bit of a knuckle skinner because the socket is so recessed into the towbar so a bit of a personal preference.A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Just to clarify the standard black socket does have Fog light .Should be the blue wire to number 2 pin. Personally I would change the vehicle to 13 pin as the Y cables are on the whole expensive.

cheers guys
learn something new every day. I always assumed when I saw the 2 sockets on vehicles it was a 7 pin and a 13 pin.
ive only ever owned vehicles with a single socketCurrent........

White socket for caravans and reversing light and auxiliary power.
Kinda of a UK thing.
14 pin more of a euro standard which we seam to be adopting.
