Sump plug drain fitting
Wish to try and make life easier in changing the engine oil and wondering what drain fittings - thread dia - you’ve used that have worked successfully plse
Alas can’t seem to get any size tube down the dipstick tube to vacuum it out so thinking the fitting may be the best next option

I can successfully get about 5.5L of oil out through the dipstick, which I feel is fine for that mid-winter interim oil change, when I really don't want to be grovelling around in the mud under the car.
I'm not sure what the diameter of the tubing is, but I am using the tube that came with the Clarke 12v pump https://www.clarketooling.co.uk/product/cl...esel-pump/.Previously:

‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol

Oh, and I remember one of the youtube D3 guys comparing different sump drains but I can't remember which one it was - perhaps one of the Aussies - Shane's Shed or Outback Discovery?Previously:

Picture of the hand vacuum pump I’ve got and for the life of me can’t seem to get any of the tubes down the dipstick tube , maybe the one in ur link has softer tubing
Think I’ll order the same pump u got as always nice getting recommendations

Awesome and will check that out , hopefully I won’t need one in getting that oil extractor , but a great back up

It would be interesting to hear other views, before you rush into buying the pump!
The tube certainly doesn't fit down the dipstick hole on the D3 as easily as it has done on my other vehicles, so it takes a bit more courage and wiggling it about to achieve the same thing. But it does get there!
I'm on my second Clarke 12v pump. The first one lasted about five years but it gave up after I had a kerosene spill in the kitchen and used it to quickly sook up a lot of kerosene. It shows how little lubrication there is with modern central heating oil - and explains why CH oil pumps don't last long unless you use a tank additive. After the kerosene incident I did try dismantling the pump and lubricating the cams, but it was never effective thereafter. Seems fine for use with engine oil, though, and the battery on the D3 is in exactly the right place to easily have the pump adjacent to the power supply and the dipstick.Previously:

Hi, I have virtually the same pump as you but I fitted the bung on to the vac tube and not put the plastic hose down the dipstick tube, I do have the D4 and not D3 so not sure if the vac tube is also on the D3.

Just twist the top off the vac tube and put the bung into the top.

Two minds alike as was just thinking the same about not ordering one just yet but seeing what others also mention
Funny u saying that about CH oil burner pumps as whilst at work would get a spell of failures
Getting bad batches and would have 10-12 pumps on my van at any one time so ended up buying them from a few different suppliers , failures would range from the internal strainer filter blocked , but air would be one of the biggest failure points , would then fit a tiger loop which helped a lot in certain applications to stop them caveatting
Indeed the pumps would last longer where 35 x second oil was being used over the kerosine 27 x second
Other issues on CH heating pumps were previous installers when fitting horizontally with the pump vent screws uppermost

I don't know if this is relevant for you, but on my D4, I fit my drain hose over the extractor tube not down it. I use a brake hose purchased from Halfords on the end of long plastic tube that fits to the pump. Created a vacuum no problem, and extracted all the oil.

For the D3, I fitted a Femco drain plug. There are other manufacturers, too, of course. I've been really happy with it. No mess anymore except for the oil filter but at least when draining you don’t need a deflector shield anymore for the oil

Many thks , Alas won’t work on the d3 with putting a hose on the outside seeing the dipstick tube is shorter than the actual dipstick itself
Great shame but good there are these quick release drain valves around
