Starter Motor Removal Disco 3 2004
1- Raise the front of the car onto ramps
2- Jack up drivers side and support with axle stand.
3- Remove ramp drivers side and wheel.
4- Remove negative terminal on battery.
5- Remove steel under tray 13mm bolts.
6- Remove 2 ally covers in drivers side wheel arch 10mm.
7- Use head torch to view starter motor.
8- Remove 13mm bolt one off that holds the diesel line cooler and push to one side.
9- On your back look up and you will see thick alternator and starter lead on solenoid.
10- Remove black cap to reveal 13mm bolt.
11- 13mm ratchet spanner will just go on the end of the nut as it is shrouded by the solenoid plastic insulation. (Note in my opinion you could add another 13mm nut onto the thread when refitting so as to allow full access to the 13mm nut and much easier to tighten).
12.Remove 4 x 8mm support bracket bolts that hold the starter stator in place onto side of sump.
13. Look up under the sump and remove the 8mm bolts that hold the thick starter lead in place to free up the lead so as to allow starter motor removal.
14.13mm bolts 2 bolts top and bottom that hold the starter motor in place remove top one from side of wheel arch and bottom one from underneath ratchet spanner flex head.
15. Tough bit take your time push starter out be carful as you need to twist round starter to reveal the 10mm alternator small lead the nut is fixed to the eye tag terminal. Not easy to do but possible.
16. Push back starter and lower down.
17. NOTE be sure that the stator threads 2 holes on side of starter motor line up with your existing starter as ours did not when we had refitted and this stops you fitting the little side support 8mm bolts.
18.Refit in reverse.
The hardest part for me was the Solenoid 13mm bolt as it is so tight to get to and as its shrouded by the solenoid casing fitting a new 13mm bolt first on the new one and then putting on the lead will help with doing up on assembly.
Good luck took me 4 hours.

Great write up, Thanks..
Was just thinking of taking mine off, as occasionally doesn’t engage.
Think I might leave it now until the weather warms up a bit, I didn’t realise it was such an involved job

I believe there is a new bracket required when fitting new starter as the design changed, that may be why you couldn't fit the bolts?IID PRO

Thanks for the write up, hopefully I'm going to tackle this one tomorrow before replacing the oil pump and cambelts. Are there any differences on a manual?

Top guide. Did mine over the past few days. On ramps in the street.
Wish I had read the bit about adding the extra nut to the terminal, would have saved me making a special ratchet socket spanner thing
Also needed the new bracket which at £40 + was a real shock !

Very helpful indeed, thank you
I managed to get the plus cable out of the way by loosening it at the battery and pulling it down. That seemed easier than removing it from the alternator.
As for the bracket to the sump, can it hurt if that is not fitted?

It’s that good I’d put it in the Wiki if I knew how too It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I've just removed the starter motor from my MY05 D3 and I'm ordering a new Denso unit, but I'm not clear on whether or not I need to order a new bracket. The old starter and bracket appear to be original to the car. I can only find the bracket in stock directly with JLR and at £50 delivered it seems unreasonably expensive so I don't want to be buying one if I don't need one.
Can anyone help me identify if I have the wrong bracket?
From looking at the tech drawings on JLR's parts website, all I can really see is that the part number has changed, looks to me like the exact same part so I'm baffled.

If that's the bracket you took off where is the problem? It will fit the Denso unit.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

That's my exact thought, so I don't understand why people have had to replace the brackets as mentioned above, but I don't want to leave myself stuck unable to fit the replacement motor if there has been a design change
