Air Filter Element for FBH

Hi there! thanks of the invaluable resource and thanks to the forum I've managed to get the FBH working!

I've noticed there is an air filter element (little cylindrical black box) that is attached to most LR3 FBH but not on the LR4 units. I've read that it is a noise suppressing component for the air intake filter.

Is this necessary? does adding one to an LR4 FBH impede the airflow rate? is it an issue having this intake pipe exposed to the elements?

I pinched the one off my D3 and fitted it to the D4 about 5 years ago, never had any problems or touched it since. Thumbs Up

Fitting one will not impede air flow, it's just an empty plastic cylinder without filtration.

A larger cylinder with smaller In and Outlet ports makes a good filter for sand etc. The air slows down after entry which allows the heavier particles to drop out into the bottom before the air carries on. It needs to be positioned with the outlet higher up.

Even better is a centrifugal filter which spins the air making the particles heavier so miss the central outlet port. With no filter element there is nothing to clog up. They just need emptying every so often

Its not unusual to find sand and grit to be in the bottom of the engine filter case which is not just because it has been impeded by the filter.

There's no filter, it's just an air intake noise suppressor. The combustion chamber develops lots of carbon build up on its own, particularly during short run cycles.

Therefore a filter would be pointless, which presumably is why there isn't one. Thumbs Up
