Inlet Manifold crack (easy) repair - 2K PU / hot staples |
|
Hello community, (anybody here to help me shift this post into the „correct“ D4 maintenance &mods area?)
I just want to share some details and pictures about my manifold crack repair. I am waiting for new aftermarket (china made and aliexpress delivered) aluminium manifold. But I found a lot of videos about 2K PU glue (JB Weld etc.) of manifolds so i gave it a try.
First of all - you will need the „expensive“ stuff. Don‘t try PVC glue or other stuff - it is not able to handle the temperatures at the manifold in hot summer days and because of the different materials (PU/PVC) I am also not sure about how long it would last.
I used Henkel Teroson PU9225 or 9225 SF (superfast) but found the same stuff (relabled) and distributed by every VW dealer (or ebay). See pictures for details.
You need in addition to that an so called primer (Teroson Kunststoff Primer 150 by Henkel).
Due to helpful videos on youtube I did an invest in an affordable smoke and overpressure detection system. Sold and delivered by amazon an every penny worth it!

My set up finding the crack:

On my video you can see that you will have to disconnect both air intakes and „seal“ the not used. In my case I was successful with just an old t-shirt stuffed into it.
Then press both buttons on the machine and wait for about 3-5 minutes. It takes a long time to „fill“ all the volume of engine intake system.
But then i saw smoke and had to dismantle just the front to high pressure diesel lines from the common rail to the injectors.
Beforehand I disconnected only the cooling water „x-line“ (don‘t know whats the name and what it does:-).
It was possible nearly without spilling any coolant because I used two of the clamps from this set:

I used the lowest temperature setting on the china hot staples machine. And the 0,6mm staples. I practiced the hot staples concerning how long to hold the button and how much pressure is needed on some old rubbish i found in the garage.
Similar to this one https://amzn.eu/d/0Svtvu7 - i will find the link if somebody needs it.

Till now it seals perfect and looks like it will last long. Maybe i never need to do the inlet manifold change….
Best regards,
Ben
Ps: another video how to „unclic“ the fuel return lines. It is realy easy with not much power or tools needed
