| Knocking sound when braking |
|
I know this is a long shot, but worth to try.
Our Disco 4 with auto trans is running quietly on bumpy gravel roads,
can not hear any extra noise from chassis. Air suspension is really great.
However if I brake gently, slowly pressing brake pedal, like slowing down to
a junction, no extra noise. If I tap the brake pedal quickly, but not locking
wheels, I hear a knock from chassis. I recently replaced front rotors and pads,
but did not see there anything suspicious. We recently bought this car, so I
don't know if the noise came after the new rotors. I can handle technical stuff,
so the rotor change was done correctly.
Something there has a play, but what?
Please advice if you have experienced similar and what part had to be replaced?

Sounds like lower front arm bushes.

I'm about as far removed from an expert as you'll get, but it could be the suspension arms. I had that on my D4 a few years ago. I don't recall it being a hugely expensive fix.
Others on here will give (better) advice.

What make are the pads, I've known pads to move in the calipers and create a noise like described 1994 Defender 300tdi 110 commercial

Travel at walking speed and jab the foot brake, if it knocks it’s either the front, rear rubber bushes on the arms or the anti roll bar bushes, more likely the arm bushes, MOT failure whichever it is. It can when others can't,

upper or lower wishbones bushes , you can get the wife to rock the steering wheel back and forth and look at the bushes you will see them moving back and forth and see the wishbone tapping the chassis if they have gone, just did my upper front last week that was how i found it the centers were torn out on one side
it clonks on pull away and on braking as well lowers are the same

As they say, front bushes. If your driving at 60mph and floor it it will feel like it is self steering. Front bushes for sure Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

It klonk only when braking.
Had my vife turning the steering wheel
and I tried to look, but could not see any
movement at the upper or lower bushings.
It’s -5C here, I have to get the car on a lift
and see then.
I have a 20t hydraulic press and I see that the
bushings are available. Should I anyhow get new
wishbones?

You can get new bushes mailed out from the UK (I did this when working in Finland) but it can be much quicker and easier to fit complete new arms and new bolts (you may have to cut the bolts off if the arms haven't been changed before)... I used a place near Turku but that's a fair way from you... I think there is another good LR independent in Tampere, maybe one of our resident Finish experts could help ? @kajtzu I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

The front lower wishbone rear bushings are shot, I need to buy new and
prefer to purchase the complete wishbone and not just the bushings.
Any suggestion where to purchase the lower front wishbones?
Preferably from the EU?
UK left EU so we have this tax issue and Rimmer who would have a kit
of the wishbones, LR073367 / LR073369 that include the 3 bolts charge
200€ for shipping and tax. Here is a brokerage fee that is just waste of
money, the customs clearance is very simple and can be done in the web.

OK, thanks. These would be cheaper but what about the bolts and eccentric washers?
To my understanding Meyle is a good brand.
I can't find a spare list for Disco 4 from where I could verify the part numbers, for
example these bolts. The I could buy the from LR here.

If doing this job again, I would buy genuine LR bolts/ eccentric washers and nuts. Aftermarket ones in my experience are not good quality, ( softer steel, and rust very rapidly).Not what you want in Finland, or UK for that matter. D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Dug a bit deeper into this, there are several part numbers for lower front wishbones.
The latest one with a stronger ball joint are P/N LR073367 and LR073369 for air suspension.
What puzzle me is the Meyle numbers, they have several numbers for "same" part:
53-16 050 0000/HD and 53-16 050 0001/HD: Range Rover Sport from YOM 2005 onwards
53-16 050 0009/HD and 53-16 050 0010/HD: Land Rover Discovery III
53-16 050 0011/HD and 53-16 050 0012/HD: Land Rover Discovery III
I bought 53-16 050 0009/HD and 53-16 050 0010/HD
The bolts that probably are needed to do both sides:
- 2x RYG000440 M16x200
- 4x RD1000034 M16x120
- 6x FX116056 or LR025050 M16 nut
- 4x RYF000203 eccentric washer

it is pretty easy if you got access to pneumatic hammer and car can be lifted for more comfortable access and should take 2h both sides plus realignment
