Discovery 4 odd EPB fault

The EPB on my 2016 D4 has failed, but not in the usual way. The EPB is off and will not apply. The parking brake symbol is flashing red and the general warning triangle light is on. The dash says lift lever to apply brake, but lifting the lever does not apparently do anything. No fault stood out when I read them and clearing the fault codes did not help. The car has recently had a non-genuine replacement EPB module, which seems to be well fitted even though I have no idea how they managed it as the adblue tank has not been removed. There might be a noise sometimes from the EPB when waggling the lever, but not often and not the usual grinding when the shoes need adjustment, just a motor spinning whine. The lever/switch is working and I have tried a spare just in case with no change. Any ideas? I have found some similar threads, but they all stop just before the problem is solved!

Before clearing the codes I had C1A47 Intermittent on the EPB. This code has not returned.

my d3 recently did this long story short the oh was using it applied the handbrake it screeched she panicked pressed the switch down and switched the ign off at same time this then makes the system do an emergency release
when i looked at it the nipple had snapped off the end of the cable and fallen into the hub it was showing the same message on the dash as yours and had a code something like emergency release activated so might be worth whipping the drums off and checking the cable is ok Thumbs Up however if its snapped its a mare to replace the cable but can be done if your spanner handy

dpround. I have exactly the same problem. Non genuine EPB fitted. A short time it worked but I had to lift and depress the lever to extinguish the parking brake light.
but now nothing works. Same lights and message as dpround. No error code.

Aby ideas?

I have spoken to the garage who fitted the EPB module. The mechanic said that it was probably a fault in the module, but he has fitted several and this one is the first to go faulty. C1A47 fault, even though it cleared and has not come back, suggests internal issues as it refers to the force sensor. I wonder if the gears have stripped as I think I hear a motor run sometimes. I'm not sure it would throw any faults if that did happen as none of the codes that I have read really fit.

I have the circuit board from the old unit and will try to put it in the module while in place before buying a new unit.
Do you think that an original board will fit and connect in the non original case?

If I had the OEM unit, I would certainly try to combine the two using as little of the pattern part as possible. More than likely all the parts are interchangeable. If all that has failed on your old unit is the gears, I'd swap just them. I have repaired a EPB with a gearset from ebay and it worked without issue for the remaining life of the vehicle. Sadly, in my case a garage swapped the EPB and I don't have the OEM unit to work with.

Does anyone know if the D3 EPB is compatible with the D4? I have a D3 with a working EPB which I am not sure what to do with. I bought the D4 as the D3 developed a nasty intermittent fault with the CAN bus and kept going into a desperately slow limp home mode with an absolute raft of fault codes. To be honest, I didn't know where to start with fixing it. Less than 2 weeks after buying the D4 we have this fault. Got to wonder if it is time to try some other car!

That's a long list of faults!

And as per the workshop manual (and experience) its best to remove those faults that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.
You have heard me say this before... Number 1 cause of EPB issues is an insufficient electrical source. (Actually, in another forum we have coined the phrase 'ITBS'.)

In fact the tell tales are there with the messages: ...no communications... . Implying there is not enough electrical power to power up the modules needed.

Therefore,
1. measure the resting voltage of your battery. If it is 12.5v or less, it needs replacing.
(the replacement should read 12.6v, at rest)
2. clear codes
3. re-read codes following a cycle of the ignition.
4. search for the root cause and adopt the pinpoint tests in the manual.

Incidentally, there are 2 devices that require significant electrical power: starter and EPB.
It may not be obvious but, the engine should be running when engaging/disengaging the epb as to mitigate the draining of the battery.

I offer no input or opinion to the fact you replaced your EPB module with a chinesium knock off...
Cheers.

Not really, it is just the super verbose way that Maxiecu makes its report. If you want to see a proper long list, I could post the one from the D3 when it is having a bad day!

lol...

As per the tech support, knowledge base derived statistics... > 70% of electronic device managed issues stem from a battery at/with insufficient capacity... the naysayers play a host of time and money wasting games only to learn their case is no different to the >70% of others.

Cheers!

The D3 does tend to throw a wobbly at low speed, manoeuvring or start-up, which certainly suggests that voltage may be playing a part. Then I leave it in disgrace for a fortnight and it is absolutely fine. I suspect a combination of 20 year old wiring, lots of abuse and a slightly lazy alternator. I don't know if I will ever get to the bottom of that fault. The D4 needs to get fixed as that was supposed to be the reliable (Ha) replacement.

Seems fairly clear...

D3 and D4 EPB modules are NOT compatible. Mechanically, yes. Electronically, no.

What EXACT part (number) have the garage fitted? Have they fitted a D3 module, which perhaps the scan tool will communicate with OK, but the rest of the car can't?

I would expect more modules to be complaining that they can't communicate with the EPB module though.
