Oil filter spigot guide missing in oil filter lower element
Hello,
Changed the oil and oil filter (Mann filter) for the first time on my Disco 3, 2005, 2,7L, V6, 169k kms.
I was surprised to find the plastic spigot filter guide, as per the Haynes manual + photo, was missing altogether. Do these break or are they removed?
I therefore simply inserted the filter and spigot into the relevant hole in the lower metal part of the filter and then carefully screwed the plastic top oil filter cover by hand and then tightened.
Is this the correct procedure?
Engine running fine with new Magnatec 5w-30 oil.
Just need some reassurance and peace of mind, so as to avoid the engine going bang later on!

I think the car would be better parked up until you have a new filter housing as now theres nothing to stop the filter sucking inwards.

Photos would help, don't run the engine until you are certain it is fitted correct.It can when others can't,

Let me try to explain.
I inserted the new filter with spigot (nipple) directly into the hole of the lower oil filter housing where the oil filter sits. I then placed the top plastic oil filter housing over the filter and then carefully screwed the plastic housing down onto the fixed metal based part.
I did not insert the new oil filter directly into the top plastic filter housing part as I could not then locate the hole in the lower housing part. Impossible to judge and see.
I assume that the filter spigot locks/aligns the filter into place into the lower housing and allows the flow of oil from the engine directly into the filter.

Yes you must place the filter spigot into its hole in the lower housing then put the upper housing over it and screw it down otherwise you court disaster. Do not follow the way the bloke on U tube does it I expect his engine is now scrap.

Hi Andy
You have commented that the spigot was missing off the oil filter that you removed. You must be totally satisfied that the spigot DID NOT BREAK OFF and remain in the bottom of the housing which is bolted to the engine block. You need to be certain that the new filter spigot FULLY engages with the filter housing before installing the canister cover

Thanks for your advice and persistence.
The spigot on the oil filter was not broken, all was okay and the filter/spigot was carefully inserted into the oil filter bottom housing as per recommendations and plastic top oil filter housing carefully screwed into place.
However, in the Haynes's manual, in the oil filter and oil change section ( 1.10 I believe) a photo shows clearly the bottom of the oil filter housing ( open without filter and plastic cover) with a kind of plastic arm/bracket with a round guide hole at the end screwed in the metal base. I assume that this is a guide part to make it easier to insert the oil filter spigot. Well, this part is missing and/or removed from my Disco 3, 2005, 2,7L, V6. My initial question was whether these break off or are they removed for some reason??
Engine running sweet as pie for the last 300 kms so I assume all is well.

Just checked the Haynes picture and it is a bit misleading, certainly mine does not look much like that. I wonder if some residual oil stays at the bottom and covers the parts shown in the picture??
As others have said, make sure the filter is properly fitted, I understand the engine can run for some time on a wrongly fitted filter before the big bang.

I misunderstood the issue above on first reading but thought I'd share a somewhat related issue I had recently:
Undertaking the first oil change I’ve performed myself since the mechanic replaced the oil cooler for me, I found the spigot/filter retainer was missing from up inside the plastic filter cover! This lead to the filter being left in place in the bottom metal part of the cooler rather than coming out with the cover as it was unscrewed. The result being some oil spillage into the vee. However, the main issue is that without the spigot in the filter cover, the oil can simply bypass the filter and circulate into the centre core of the filter through the hole in the top rather than through the filter itself and as a result not filter the oil! I've fitted a new cover with the spigot installed.
The attached pictures show the inside of the new filter cover and the spigot that was missing from the cover I replaced.
