Discovery 5 or Defender 110 to Replace a Discovery 3 or 4? |
|
The first four series of Discovery (Discovery Generations 1 and 2) were practical boxy vehicles which were positioned by Land Rover between the old Defender and the Range Rover.
However, Land Rover’s plan for the new Defender was to place it up market relative to the old Defender. This presented the problem that the fifth series of Discovery (Discovery Generation 3) (known as Discovery 5 although it does not officially have a number), had to be significantly different from the new Defender and moved away from the practical boxy approach to a more stylish approach.
In some ways a new Defender 110 would have been a more appropriate follow on to the Discovery 4 than a Discovery 5 is.
So, the question is what do owners of first four series of Discovery, who are in the market for a new vehicle, consider is the most appropriate replacement (assuming that they are sticking with Land Rover and if they are not moving up to a Range Rover)?
• New Discovery 5
• New Defender 110

Volvo XC90?
Seriously, if I was in the market to replace my D3 I’d look at the D5. Its looks have grown on me over the years and it’s pretty mature. It is comfortable and big. Unsure about its future, however. It’s been around now for 7 years or so. It sells much less than the Defender.

Having been a D3, D4, XC90 and now a new Defender 110 owner, I can say that the 110 is NOT a D3/4 replacement. The XC90 is closer and does 90% of what the D3/4 does and does it brilliantly. I looked at the D5 and Defender before getting the XC90, a car I still miss and one many on here have moved to.
The Defender is a really capable car but is packaged badly and doesn't come close to the utilitarian flexibility that the D3/4 provided. It's the same size externally but the boot is poor and the rear door is a pain. It also has a much smaller opening and I really miss the split tailgate.
As driving car, it's close to the D3/4, but updated, and so far is proving reliable. JLR dealers are still crap though.
If you want the size and flexibility of a D3/4 then the XC90 or D5 is the way to go, although they have much more of a car like driving experience than the D3/4 and Defender.
The other option is the new Land Cruiser, which looks really good.
Why did I sell the XC90? I needed 3500kg towing capacity and non of the family liked the D5 and all hated the middle seats. If I didn't need to tow, i'd have kept the XC90. Brilliant car. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

As I no longer needed the extra seats, a used SDV8 L405 was the best replacement for me.
I drove over 12k miles in a top spec D5. Great car, but I didn’t gel with it for several reasons.
We’re all different though. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Having had all versions of Discovery up to and including a 4, I went with a Defender 110 D300. That was 3.5 years ago, and still not regretting it in any way.

There is nothing in the new vehicle LR stable that will replace a D3. I know I've tried them all. I now use a VW T6 4motion. Not as good off road but ticks all the other boxes. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I’ve got a D5, had it after a D3 & D4. Had it several years & done 50k in it.
Had the usual woes including a new engine, leaking front windscreen, broken window winder, front wheel bearing replaced, turbo heat shield replaced, replaced headlight. It’s also on its third set of new brake rotors and pads, which is a pain.
Quite like the car, it looks good, has a big carrying capacity. I’ll keep while I can still get a LR warranty on it, although the price of that has crept up to £1,440 per year.
Then there’s the servicing, tyres etc. Just spent £4k plus on it, between everything.
Had a new Defender 90. Didn’t like it, now gone.
Think that will then be the end of the line with LR. The prices of new cars generally is silly money and there is plenty of competition. I’d go for Volvo personally.

Plenty of threads about this on here including my own:

Personally I'm keeping my D4 for a bit longer, but have pretty much decided a 4.4 TDV8 L405 will be it's replacement, although I do like the look of the D300 130 Defender Outbound, despite it's length. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Replaced my D4 (predecessor to D3 and FFRR after 25 yeras JLR) with a stop gap - Dacia Duster.
Am impressed especially off road so now will look at the new Duster due in a few months.
Stop sniggering at the back !

The deciding factor for me was the split-tailgate, plus (for me) the L405 is more comfortable and a nicer drive on road. I’ve no doubt that the new Defender is superior off-road, but the L405 is still supremely capable.
I should add, that I wouldn’t have bought a brand new L405 or indeed a new L460. They’re simply not worth the asking price in my opinion.

With the mentions of the FFRR L405, what is the general consensus of the 3.0 diesel, is it the same engine as the D4? Very few V8 Diesels brought over to here in Ireland, vast majority of them were V6.
Am in similar situation, can't see much beyond the D4 at the moment. Defender looks interesting but very pricy here, earlier L405's becoming an option.
I pull a large horse box with two big ponies at least once a week, so need the higher rated pulling power, we have a Volvo V90CC but haven't even bothered with a hitch for that.

My interest in the L405 has a lot to do with the 4.4l TDV8 anyway.
I've wanted one for years and just need to own one.
Obviously if it was in a D4 it would be better, but the conversion would be expensive and I'd need a replacement vehicle whilst it took place.
The 3.0l V6 is the same engine as the D4, so you can make your own mind up about that.
For me it would also have to be the 2017 onwards L405.
Partly because the toys inside differ a bit, but partly because the earlier ones are cheap for a reason, the annual tax is stupidly high, and will only get bigger.
2013 TDV8 - @£800
2017 TDV8 - @£190 Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

After a month with the Defender 250 D, after saying that the D3 was the best, and I also thought it was 18 years younger, I say that if I had the chance today to buy a completely new D3, would I do it? The answer is NO, I would feel like I was stuck on Groundhog Day! The D3 was the best without a doubt, but 18 years ago, with its broken door, it had some problem... I am 1.85 tall and I found myself many times getting down on one knee to retrieve something from the trunk, or trying to juggle not to support my door divided over the nose of some poor sucker's car...and not everyone was so considerate...so I think we magnified everything , I felt very sorry when our D3 left, I miss him, or maybe I miss the days when I was almost 20 years younger, with my daughter 20 years younger too..Or maybe I have the perception that the world, in general, was better almost 20 years ago….
…..but now I will say that the Defender is its replacement without a doubt, 18 years ahead, and therefore it deserves the same type...today it is the best...and then there are some cars on the street that we all see and that no one looks at, such as the Seat, the Renault, the BMW, the MB...the Volvo...and they are good cars...but without more…and my choice would have been the 90 and not the 110 but with 25 cm more trunk length, a shame!!
IMHO lost in translation!
DISCOVERY 3 SE man. TDV6 2006, my true love!
