Refurbishing wheels.

Hello all,

I’m looking for opinions/advice and pictures.

I have diamond cut alloys on my discovery. I love them. When I purchased the car, the previous owner had the wheels recut. They looked amazing. Less than 10 months after, the lacquer on all four started to bubble/spilt. Like a rash. I called the company who refurbished them (invoice to prove) and explained the situation. They replied saying it was stone chips. I queried how all four got stone chips at the same time…. He said he would recut them for £110 each.

Since then, I have spoken with another company who advised me that the above was from poor work, the wheels can still get chips in over time. He told me to powder coat them instead.

What do people suggest? I don’t want to pay £400+ for a recut to only last for a short while again. But I’m not sure if I want to power coat and loose the aesthetics of the diamond cut.

I found pictures Google to compare. But does anyone have a discovery who have had the diamond cut alloys Powder coated?

Thanks.

I run a 2014 XXV. The wheels on it are ceramic finished which is not far off diamond turned.

My wheels were showing signs of decay and I had them powder coated in black which I like, a lot.

I've had numerous sets of wheels refurbed before and the quality does vary hugely depending upon how well the work is done and by whom.

Once powder coated then you have to be uber careful when changing tyres that the fitter doesn't damage the powder coat as once it fails it spreads.

Diamond turned wheels can be lacquered I think? Not something I've experienced myself but maybe worth looking into?

If you do go for powder coating then although they are a (very) long way from you Lepsons in Kent are very good and offer a courier collection. I'd not use anyone else myself.

Thumbs Up
 Jim

Welcome.

I have not owned those style diamond turned wheels myself but I believe that after time, they all start to degrade.

Have a hunt around via 'Search' on here for more...

Diamond cut wheels can only be refurbished on a lathe a few times, as metal is removed from the wheel each time. I would recommend you go for a powder coat finish which should last much longer, particularly if you driving on salted Scottish roads. 👍

Thank you. That’s great advice.

I would think black is the go to colour?

This is what your car would look like with the wheels refurbished in black. More photos on this link

Also have a look at Dark Shadow Chrome ..... had that on my old Java D3.
https://www.powderfx.co.uk/product/shadow-chrome-sb/
And no, it won't turn your D4 into a Pimp Mobile .....before anyone suggests it. Confused

Shadow Chrome is only as good as the guy with the spray gun. I've seen a fair few wheels done with this (applied over black powder primer) and it's quite blotchy, so keep an eye on that.

I'm yet to come across a coater who bothers to mask of the hub mounting face properly before coating - usually choosing to just sand it back to bare metal once they're finished. I didn't even know it was a problem until I had a D4. Approx £1k later on the refurb and new discs/pads x2 before i figured out the problem. I think due to the weight of these cars the wheel hub face is critical to the wheel and brakes running true...

Using a spray gun? ……. and whilst the wheels are still on the hub (no doubt still with tyres on) ? Shocked

Surely that’s just a DIY home job ……. would anyone in their right mind get their wheels done “professionally” like this ?

All professional wheel refurbs should be powder coated (eg off the hub, no tyres on) ……. even Shadow Chrome (with no blotchiness).
