I was reading on pistonheads about a ‘community workshop’ idea where it was proposed that a group (maybe 8-10) of like-minded car enthusiasts could share workshop space and equipment, give them space to store cars and work on them, share ideas and expertise etc. It looks like the thread went cold, so probably didn’t get off the ground. I like this idea and I could see myself participating in something like this, especially as I can’t even get my D4 down the side of our 1930s semi! So, I only do basic jobs on the car on fine days as it stands outside the front door of our house, and I’d love to have the space and opportunity to do more. Renting space for myself in London’s suburbia is prohibitive and council lock-ups just aren’t big enough. Has anyone come across a community workshop or similar kind of thing that has been set up and works? I’ve seen ads for self service garages / car ramp hire though these are v expensive at £2k per month and the one I saw advertised had a 1.8m height restriction.

Like everything, these are a great idea until ruined by one who takes up all the space, borrows or breaks all the shared equipment and generally takes the . Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.
