Drive Belt Balancer Wobble

Hi All,

I'm convinced my D4 engine is noisier than it should be. I'm trying to investigate what this might be and plan the preventative change of the main drive belt and tensioner. As part of my investigation I've noticed the Harmonic Balancer seems a bit wobbly? Could some knowledgeable people have a look and see if the movement on this video is normal? An illusion as the belt moves? Or terminal? I read a lot of negativity about crankshaft issues but I love my D4 and don't want it to go pop. Any opinions welcome.

They do sometimes become soft over time so just change when doing the timing belts. Alternatively, you can change it now once the acc drive belt tension is released. Not a big job 6 bolts hold it to the crank pulley.

Hi Horgy!

Did you end up replacing the crank pulley and if so did it cure the wobble? I’ve got the same on my 3.0sdv6 rrs and it looks to be behaving exactly the same as in your video!

Many thanks in advance

Ben

Hi Ben,

This was a little while ago and the D4 is still going strong! I did end up changing the belt tensioner, and the aux belt, as I didn't know when they were done and it was cheap-ish for the piece of mind. I've also gone to 5W40 and the engine seems fine! I think it was just an illusion of the video, is yours moving a lot?

Hi mate,

Thanks for the speedy reply!

I’d say mine looks exactly as yours does in the video (but in real life if you know what I mean 😆)

No noises or symptoms of anything it’s just something I noticed after changing the throttle body! I’ve compared it to my brothers Touareg and it does look like there’s more movement in mine than his!

I’ll try and get a video and work out how to upload it on here!

Thanks again
