Rattling noise from engine? D3 - TDV6

Good Evening All,

First of all only signed up to this yesterday so apologies if this is in the wrong area and got my first D3 at the weekend. However owned Land Rovers for 30 odd years and have several series. Long and short though hello all 👍

Now onto the issue! I have recently purchased a 2008 TDV6 Commercial. Looks and drives great. However there is a rather annoying rattling noise coming from my engine. Sounds similar to when the oil pump is firing up but this stops after about 3 seconds then you are left with a similar noise from what sounds like the engine. I just wondered if anyone has had a similar issue or sound and has an idea where to steer me before I start pulling the whole thing apart.

I couldn't work out how to upload a video 🤦‍♂️
But the noise sounds similar to the oil pump but doesn't seem to be that and goes up and down with the revs.

Thanks in advance!

Ted

P.S - As I couldn't post a video it's almost sounds like a tapping noise that goes up and down with the revs. The previous owner said he was told it could be an injector but not convinced. I have noticed the main fan belt tensioner bounces around a lot when it's running but ive seen that before and no noise. However I will replace that anyway but I would be shocked if it was that. Making this noise. Apparently it's been doing it for years.. 😬

Hello,

I had a similar experience. Changed the aux belt tensioner and all was well. I have a link to my original video of the noise. You can see if it sounds similar.

Hopefully the video link works.

I think that might be it you know! Just listening and watching your video it sounds almost identical. I've ordered the parts and fan removal tool to get to it. Fingers crossed this solves it. Thank you for your help!

Exactly that!

That's all part of the Land Rover lifestyle it's all like a big family that help each other out.

I will keep you posted! Hopefully the tensioner will turn up in the next couple of days an I can do it one evening.

If you could pop the belt off, start her up for a minute and see if the noise disappears.
Thumbs Up

Yes I will give that a go once I get that fan off. I need to use the car tomorrow but I'm hoping the tensioner and fan tool will be here tomorrow so I will try that first to be sure. I think it needs replacing anyway the amount it bounces about when it's running.

I will keep you posted with an update!

UPDATE:

Unfortunately changing and putting the new tensioner on hasn't solved the issue. Although the idler wasn't very good and was on its way out. The new one took about 3 times as much force to de tension. So back to square one again.

What a nightmare. It definitely isn't belt related though as I started it up with the belt off.. The noise was still there. So I'm starting to think maybe it's something internal.

What mileage is on the car? It could be a number of things the worst of which being worn chains/tensioners/tappets to a timing belt issue. Do you know if the oil pump is the original or has it been upgraded to the later reinforced type?

This site can't host every video we want to share otherwise it would be swamped, so it's better to upload to YouTube or similar and post the link on here!! Thumbs Up

The engine is 2008, 2.7 TDV6 - 160,000 miles. It's had a new timing belt apparently, due to the last owner who is a good friend. So I have no reason to doubt him.

I had thought about the chains an tensioners etc. I'm currently unsure what oil pump is on it it's certain one thing I want to check. I plan to get a endoscope camera in to look tomorrow at the part number on it to find out.

Although I would like to put a new pump and chains and tensioners on for peace of mind but it looks like both are a massive job. I assume the tappets are adjustable while the covers are off. You do hear the pump rattle for a few seconds then stop. Then it's just that rattling noise.

I've just uploaded a video to YouTube so this may be of help!

Yeah there' something going on there alright so further investigation seems definitely warranted. I'd suggest you take off the front cover and have a proper look at the timing belt and oil pump. That said, if it is a chain or tappet issue, it is as you have suggested a bigger job and usually one for when the body is off.

One step at a time though!! Thumbs Up

Agreed!

I think that's the next plan get that front cover off do some investigation. Then if the body has to come off so be it. As you said one thing at a time.

I will keep everyone updated!
