Travel the world in a "mature" Disco4?

Hey guys,

I'm currently driving a 2011 Disco4 SDV6 HSE with 350k KMs on it, as a daily driver. Also planning to quit my job and travel the world for the next 2-3 years by car.

Now the big question that has been keeping me up: Should I use my beloved Disco4, that definitely needs some heavy investment before taking off, or am I better off going for another used 4x4 that has a better reputation when it comes to reliability (e.g. Land Cruiser).

So far my Disco has been rather trustworthy, but with all the horror stories about Disco4 reliability and the mileage on mine, I also don't wanna risk getting stranded somewhere in the African Desert or the Arctic Circle.

Any recommendations or similar experiences would be very welcome 🙏

Isn’t the saying in Australia, if you want to go into the bush take a Land Rover. If you want to come back take a Land Cruiser Whistle

Personally, the thought of travelling the world in a Disco 3 or newer would keep me up at night. They are just too complicated for bush repair/back street garages to repair or get parts in other countries.

I’d either be going for something old like a Disco 1/2 that’s had a full overhaul, or a Defender TD5 or older, if you want to do it in a Land Rover. Otherwise, get a Land Cruiser.

You want something that will run on poor quality fuel and easy access for repairs. Not hoses or parts only accessible by lifting a body off.

Something with Axles and not arms/bushes everywhere.

Whilst using the D3 in the UK, i tend not to worry because the AA will get me home.
I shiver at the thought of taking a Discovery abroad - Del's story always comes to mind.
My son was talking of doing a road trip in the D3 to Europe and beyond into Asia, i persuaded him to either take my V70 or get a Landcruiser.
(He's been looking at Landcruisers on Autotrader lately Laughing )

Ah the joys of travelling to far flung places in a D3. It has its highs (Tunisia, Pyrenees and several Northcape trips) and lows (having to scrap my D3 up in NW Norway). Go for it. Thumbs Up

A few gratuitous pics just to give a flavour of the far N.

Happy days indeed but now in the past. Sad

PS No idea why the pic formatting has gone weird. Embarassed
