New LPFP+HPFP+filter - Still 2290 and lose power on load |
|
Dear forum.
Disco 3 TDV6 MY08, and the saga continues, unfortunately...
Had an issue with low fuel pressure (error 2290) that put my disco in limp mode when under load (uphills, kickdowns etc') so I took my car to a diesel injection systems specialist here in Barcelona.
The HPFP was leaking diesel like crazy so it was rebuilt, lab tested twice for pressure, installed and now working well and no leaks. While there we've put a new original MANN fuel filter though the old one didn't seem clogged or very dirty. (old one had 10K km on it)
Still didn't fix the problem. The mechanic started investigating the LPFP, found that it does not supply enough pressure in the shredder valve so we've replaced the LPFP and filter in the tank.
Today it was installed but we still get 2290.
Specialist says they have also tested the injectors in the lab and they were fine.
Anyone has any idea where to go next with this?
I'm a bit lost.
Trying to avoid going to official Land Rover here in Barcelona to avoid a second mortgage...
Thanks!

You are not alone.. clearly a fault on these age cars..
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/limp-mode-warm-208363.html
I have just spent a fortune on the exact same things.. mine would drive for 20 minutes perfectly and then have the same issues.. engine fault gearbox fault lowering suspension and lose all power . You could clear the faults however it got progressively worse requiring a full recovery.
I have replaced fuel filter, LPFP and HPFP and it seemed to cure it however the dreaded issue is back.
On the other post Deesidelad has replaced his fuel rail and still has the problem…
Anyone successfully cured it other than with a box of matches? My fault code is different being a P0087 fuel pressure too low but clearly something is going wrong somewhere…

Thanks for your reply.
I replaced my fuel pressure sensor a while ago to try and fix it but it didn't do the trick (part no. 1387695S) so I reverted to the original.
I will try replacing it with the new one again and see what happens.
I'm starting to worry that it might be more of an electrical gremlin or a faulty wire somewhere and that will be a whole different story to solve...
Thank you

Update #1:
I have replaced the battery with a new Exide EA1000 and for 1000km had 0 issues with limp mode on acceleration, uphill climbs etc!
This makes me suspicious that there is some sort of an electrical issue that is either with the distribution of the current throughout the car's components, OR that there is an issue with the alternator not supplying enough power to the fuel pump when on high demand (uphill, load and such).
Any thoughts on that?
BTW- The car is 99.9% stock. The 0.01% being a cigarette lighter that was replaced with USB charger and an aftermarket screen for Carplay that uses the same circuit as the USB charging port.
Thanks!

When you research this site this problem is covered multiple times with multiple links .., yet unbelievably there is no definitive reason or results for this problem.. surely someone out there must have cured this issue somehow… anyone?
I have a recent battery, brand new Hpfp and LPFP , new filter, decent fuel and still it exists , now albeit only under load… back to the garage Monday….

Hi and thank you for your reply.
It is true, there are numerous posts about this issue with most of them just fading away without any solutions.
Which makes me wonder- is it really possible that are there so many D3s driving around binging and bonging under load, restarting and moving on? 🤔
I truly hope you will find a solution to your disco's problem soon, and I as well.
Will update on this post if and when I do.

Yes very frustrating though when mine goes into fault mode it’s actually dangerous with engine shutting down and losing power so that it will hardly crawl down the road.. not helpful with a car full of dogs or towing a Horsebox so I need that answer..
haven’t found a single thread which offers the eureka answer….
Keep you posted!

I am with loanrangie.
After much chagrin, the pressure sensor sidelined a mate's D3. Diagnosis? After a replacement (two times) of the HPFP (the first time, the teams that worked on it wrongly assumed the remanufactured unit was faulty. It wasn't, it was determined to be just the pressure sensor).
My own D3 lost power but did not go into full Limp Mode. It was the sensor for the fuel temperature sensor. Therefore, have you also checked the leak off tube that has the fuel temperature sensor?
See https://allbrit.de/epc.cfm?PAGE=3030405-T2...E=en#9K022 for diagram.

Yes.
I’ve replaced the sensor as demonstrated in this video:
It didn’t do much to fix the problem…
Is this the sensor you referred to?
Thanks

Thank you both chaps… spookily enough that is what the next thing to be replaced…I will let you know definitely the outcome of its replacement..
Also spooky having watched the video my MPG had also significantly increased over the last few months..from the low 22’s to 25’s and 26’s ..
Thank you so much! Keep you posted!

Dashdash, that is the one that was eventually replaced in the mate's 2008 D3 that had two goes at replacing the HPFP.
My own fault, P0183 - Fuel temperature sensor A circuit high input, was rectified by the replacement of the part that was shown on the allbrit.de link I posted before. The replacement wasn't without incident though. A rubber seal was somehow initially misaligned, and the fault reappeared within 10 km. Cleaned and reseated, and the fault has stayed away for 21 days now.
Confirming the video, I did read that the P2290 - Fuel pressure too low fault replacement of the sensor must be done by a high quality part (which the video did mention). LeighW

Alrighty. After the summer break the parts cannon will keep on firing...
I will order a (hopefully) high quality fuel pressure sensor (HFS102G) and see what gives.
Thanks again for all the help.
Will keep you posted

Have any of you checked the fuel temperature? Mine reads about -30 degrees when it’s 15-20 degrees.

Today I’ve successfully towed my big double axle caravan 85 miles without any loss of power. Seems heavy on indicated fuel use at 18mpg though but range looks normal.
This with the old fuel temp sensor slaved in because the new sensor passes fuel leaving the sensor pins awash due to it being mounted vertically and not allowing fuel to run away.
If it gets me home on monday the same i think i’ll install a genuine LR part. You may have seen my own post about this issue.
Either it is the pins being awash causing fault or the delicate natuure of the leak off pipe assembly stops you getting a good connection by pushing the red connector fully home and maybe adding a plastic tie-wrap to see it stay put. I have broke two pipes in the same place upto now.
My old sensor showed -41 but now the slaved in sensor shows the temp of the engine bayroughly 55-65 and seems to work ok
