3ltr ingenium on Barum engines

Don’t know if any of you watch barum engines on YouTube, but they have a 3ltr 6 pot enginium in that’s 3 years old, 21k miles and doesn’t look like it’s had an oil change. It looks like it’s full of black sludge and possibly done a big end.

Another example of too long an interval between services again ?

yeah I did see it.

Sludge was bad. I've seen much better 15 year old engines

It's can't be all lack of service

I do wonder if the wrong oil was specified. This was something salvage rebuilds fell upon on another brand. They initially said it had never been serviced, and then disovered the oil spec had been changed to avoid sludge.

Could also be a combination of long life oils and EGRs causing carbon build up in the oil

Would a flush at oil change stop this happening?

It was something I was pondering for my own 2019 car.

They were assuming a 2 year service interval, and thus had only needed to have one oil change (as per my Jag), but I think someone said on here (or RRS) that JLR state a 1 year service interval.

Certainly now a flush isn't going to clean it.
Maybe a flush at every oil change may help (as long as it doesn't dislodge stuff and cause blockages). or change the oil yearly. But at £100 for 8-10lires oil isn't as cheap as it was. (but cheaper than conquencies)

Shocked Food for thought. I had my first oil change at 20000 miles and it's now done 32000. Think I'll get it changed now.

To be honest it was something I normally see over on Dave’s YouTube channel. But to see that kind of build up over short mileage and 3 years is horrible. Especially when they had been following the service interval recommend by JLR.

But I do want to add to this story, that JLR refused to assist with repairing or give a goodwill towards the failed engine. Especially when it’s not missed a service and only out of warranty expired. There could be more to this than meets the eye. I mean, JLR uses some good will gestures for older 2.0l chain replacements and we have see plenty of good will gestures towards d3/4 engine repair from crank/ bearings.
