Stupid Disco Lights!
…… and No, not the Glitterball variety.
The MY14> DRL’s ……they’re just plain daft!
When it’s a bit dull and you want to light up the rear-end (especially with a grey D4) and you don’t really need dipped beam.
Switch on the sidelights …….. and the DRL’s go dimmer.
What’s that all about …….. or is it just mine?

Seem to remember there being some regulation around DRLs being too bright for night time use so they are required to automatically dim / switch off when the normal lights come on?2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Scandi is a good way to go Del, will get that configured next time at my indie.
But no doubt I’ll still get the dimmed version of the DRL’s.
That seems a very odd regulation Kevin (but no doubt a typically odd eu regulation).
So if DRL’s are too bright at night, then what about headlights (especially the furore over many being too powerful).
Maybe they’ll come up with a regulation to switch them off because they’re also too bright for night time use

sorry it must be me but i dont understand your reply but rereading you original post i can only assume that you think drl's should be on the rear also ? in which case thats what your side lights are for and when you swith on the side lights the front drl's either go out and the side lights front come on or the drl's dim to become the side lightsplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

so people can see you when your coming at them with the sun behind you i think drl's have been a legal requirement since about 2011 its the same for motorcycles also

The way Scandinavian DRL mode is supposed to work is the following:
- light switch in position zero (off), car ambient light sensor thinks it is bright enough: whatever silly LED thing is lit. They’re NOT meant to aid you but the other traffic
- light switch in position zero (off), car ambient light sensor thinks it is dark enough: whatever corresponds to low beam on your vehicle is lit to aid you. Happens also in daylight when you drive into a parking garage, tunnel, etc.
In the rear Scandinavian DRL should have the rear DRLs always on unless this has changed recently.
Driving somewhere in Portugal or Spain and in bright daylight makes the DRLs pretty much useless, yes.
As for myself, I have the light switch in position 3 (auto) which results in the low beam always being turned on.

Ok, I think people have picked me up wrong here, so I’ll try and explain in simpler terms.
My initial point is around the DRL’s use in daytime only… not dark evenings/mornings nor night time.
On a summers day - Saturday 24th Aug at 9:30am it was dull and the A road I was driving had intermittent shading by trees.
I deemed it wasn’t that bad to use dipped beam, so I moved the light switch from off to sidelight mode.
When in that mode, no extra frontal side lights exists on the MY14> D4 (well none discernible on mine), it simply uses the DRL’s as the sidelights ….. but on a dimmer mode to standard daylight running.
So on a bright day, I get bright DRL’s and on a duller day (with sidelight switch on) I get duller DRL’s.
That is what I find quite stupid, the fact you want a bit more light and in doing so (whilst the rear lights come on, which is also what I want) the front end goes dimmer.
Yes I could put my dipped beam on, but as mentioned earlier, imo the conditions didn’t really warrant it…… and that distracts from the point I’m trying to make.
Use of the DRL’s for the rear is a totally separate point, but something I reckon should be standard.
How many muppets have we seen driving in fog with DRL’s on and the rear not lit up, I’ve certainly seen far too many!...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Im with you on this RonP, LR of a certain era seem to be the only ones
I think the regulation was/used to be that if the DRL was within a certain distance of the indicator then it would have to dim when you indicated. Also think it was a similar kind of stupid ruling that if you required rear lights to be on then it was dark enough to have side lights but LED DRL were considered too bright for dusk so they dimmed when you switched to sidelights.
IMHO if you can set the CCF to Scandinavian settings then front DRL should be on bright permanently along with rear lights (until dipped beam is used that is)2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
