A dispute between my wife and I. I maintain that in the 1970s and 1980s, people swore that you couldn't get car sick if you sat on a newspaper. Was that just my parents, or was it a well-known "thing"?
I think this migrated to rubber earthing straps on the rear bumper, but I distinctly remember going on school trips armed with a copy of the Daily Telegraph as a cushion-topper.

We just didn't travel in cars.
I had a journey as a kid to Ireland in my Uncle's car, maybe as a 4 or 5years old. I was sick 5x on the 255 mile journey to Holyhead, but sick 3x before I crossed the River Thames. We lived in Battersea

If it was the 70s/80s you would have squashed your chips Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!

We were told to bring a newspaper to sit on for a school coach trip in the mid 70's so it must of been a Placebo thing or just that the teachers didn't want to clean the seats! Stu

It was recommended for sea-sickness too!Previously:
2010 FL2 TD4e GS
‘93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW - still got this, non-runner on SORN.
‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol
‘83 110 CSW V8 - best ever!
Range Rover 2-door V8 (not sure of year - 4-speed box and vacuum diff switch)
Series III SWB Diesel
Excellent. Thank you. I knew it had been A Thing. I wonder how it started out as a theory? Once, when the newspaper magic failed, I threw-up on the coach to The British Museum. The person that took me to get cleaned-up then gave my History teacher and me a tour of behind the scenes.

That must have been amazing . I love that museum. Is that when you turned into Indiana Jones?
Thinking about it, with that surname there must be a Welsh connection somewhere!Gary

Same as in the 80's the 'fashion' for chavved up cars to have the 'anti-static' straps hanging from rear of car. How do they work, given the car is already sat on rubber tyres......
Ah, but those straps were conductive, dissipating any static that had built up. Aircraft have static wicks for the same reason but they are going much faster and static affects comms.
Lengths of chain were the poor man's alternative.
About the same time as beaded seat covers!
