Gnomad's Law of Hockey
It's that time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when winter winters, and we sometimes head back inside and watch some idiot box. On a random program there is a mention of the Mighty Ducks, a hockey team based in southern California.
The song says it never rains in southern California, but more important it never freezes over, so nobody has ever played pond hockey in Anaheim, or Las Vegas, or Ft Lauderdale, or Tampa Bay or anywhere else south of the Mason-Dixon line. I therefore propose Gnomads Law of Hockey, that no city where pond hockey has never been played shall not host a National Hockey League team. I believe I will have th support of the horthern tier of the US, all of Canada, and the Nordic countries....possibly Scotland but not sure if the ponds actually do freeze over. Playing somewhere that has never known the joy of slapping a puck around on a pond or outside rink is stolen valor.

Or without the full body armour.
USA - taking British girls' sports(*) and then playing them in armour since the 1910s...
(* - modern hockey started in Britain although there were versions played thousands of years ago. Baseball is just rounders but with catching gloves (what? why?) and helmets.)
Oh, and American Football is rugby league with armour and longer breaks.

My wife played hockey (on the grass type) when she was at school.
I see a glint in her eye when she is holding a wooden spoon, and I haven't emptied the dishwasher.....

"grass hockey" is greatly exceeded by Canadian ice hockey in terms of permitted violence - my old boss (who played Canadian Ice Hockey for a few years) stated that the only rule that was regularly enforced was "Do not kill anyone, even your opponent".Rob Smith

I support your proposition Gnomad! If you've never experienced the thrill/fear of skating around a freshly frozen pond, ears wide open for the sound of creaking ice, you've never played real ice hockey. Our local pond was stripped of all large stones in a 150 meter radius, as the standard technique for determining the thickness of ice was to take the largest stone you could find, and chuck it up in the air, hoping it bounced. If it went through the ice, you came back the next day.
