Gear knob removal

HI,
I need to remove the auto shift knob to get under the centre console. While searching through threads I've found a couple of different ways but still can't get it off. The first was to pull down the bottom cover from the knob and pull out the clips. 2nd was to just pull it up and off. Mine wouldn't budge and I couldn't get a cover off so I tried wiggling it a bit. Something gave and the knob now swivels round a bit but still won't come off. I had a moment of panic as I couldn't then press the button to shift out of park, but a bit more wiggling and it is working again. I think I might have broken something though. Any ideas ?

The gear selector must be in park , then just pull the whole thing upwards ( gator comes off aswell) G4 Gone ...but not forgotten
