Roof Rack Question.
Has anyone any advice about the best roof rack to use given that I want to carry a roof top tent and tie down at least one tyre case at the front of the rack. I presently have the tent on two Rhino bars. Thanks in advance for any advice. Rob2006 Discovery SE Zambezi Silver

Whatever rack you choose, be aware that the rated roof loading of a D3 is only 54Kg, including the weight of the rack! Go for the lightest, strongest rack. I got the genuine Land Rover rack because it is all alloy and very light.

Strange ...the total load capacity including the weight of the rack \ bars here in blighty is 75kg 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
I have a Tradesman Oval full length steel rack made to fit a Howling Moon roof top tent (also the same as the ARB rooftop tents).
The rack has a mesh floor at the front and wind deflector and mounts to the 8 nutserts on the D3's roof. I've carried 2 * 20lt water containers up the front and there would still be room for a tyre case.
The load up on the roof with rack and tent exceeds the 70kg. Tent is 65kg on it's own and the rack is probably around 35kg.
By the way if you are interested in the rack or tent or both they are for sale. Both have had little use. The rack also has shovel and hilift jack holder. Not sure how to freight to Tassie but I'm sure if there is a will there is a way. Let me know if you are interested with PM.
Here a link to the post on the sale of the rack and tent.

I am looking at the Rackmaster from Opposite Lock. The 1.6m covers the raised rear section of the roof, and the rack is very low profile, with no sides. It has a t-nut locking system for attaching stuff. $1200-ish fitted. Weight is around 20kg, which needs to be considered as D3 owners manual says 50kg offroad ad 75kg onroad limits for roof. Rim/Tyre is 35kg.New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue

My personal view is that the load limit is there by LR so no one takes legal action if some idiot tries to blame LR for tiping it over when with a load on top going around a corner way too fast
My answer is use common sense and be responsible for your own actions

No it will physically take a hell of a lot more weight (including you Steve ) ....but you wouldn't really want to drive with too much up on top as it may cause instability 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I have a funny feeling that the conservative load rating may have something to do with the very light roof material (are they fibreglass? My GPS works just fine anywhere inside so it can't be metal). That said, I've used three standard LR cross bars for a fairly rooftop tent over some rough tracks and no problem noted. Spare is on the back, though.
Notwithstanding warnings about weight, the stresses when moving about have to be 3-4 times the stresses when the vehicle is parked, so standing on the roofrack shouldn't cause a problem (two in the rooftop tent not always staying still ). Wouldn't stay on the roof when moving, though.Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.
