Overall wheel diameter can be up to 50mm larger |
|
Hi all,
There have been many discussions on this forum about the maximum legal increase in tyre diameter.
For most of us I think we thought 15mm was the maximum allowable. In Victoria you can find this stated in the Vicroads website. This is correct for passenger cars but for off-road passenger vehicles you can go up to 50mm without needing any kind of certifcation. This is a national code of practice and is stated in the following Vehicle Standard's Bulletin 14. See page 16.
Find the bulletin here on the Australian Government's infrastructure website.

Hope you find this information useful.

I'd be very careful with that. as far as Im aware the national code of practice is just that and has not been officially adopted by any state. you must still comply with the current ADR's. I would suggest you check with your state transport authority first. from what I have been told, the national code of practice will never be adopted by any state and this info came from the traffic police training officer.

CW,
This was supplied by Vicroads after enquiring. I have the email correspondance and happy to share it however you might be right that it isn't adopted by all states but if Vicroads are referring to it and quoting relevant clauses then Victoria must be adopting it - yes, no, maybe?.

Some states have adopted the National Code, QLD and NSW (I believe) have not yet endorsed it. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

we had a traffic officer come to the club a fortnight ago and according to him no one has nor will adopt the code and this is where some confusion is coming in and misleading information is being given.
