It's been too many years and another life since I was last on the Island but where to camp depends much on what you want to do when you are there. Suggest that you checkout http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forest...onal_park/ which will give the details that you need to know. Holiday periods get fairly busy and at times you need a set of traffic lights just to get across the beach to the water. Booking into some of the more northern camp sites can get you away from the beach traffic. It is worth considering driving up forty mile beach from Teewah north of Noosa to Rainbow Beach and taking the ferry at Inskip to the Island, much shorter and more enjoyable than the run in from Gympie. Make sure that you plan the beach travel during low tide especially on the run between Inskip and Dilli Village. Its a great place so enjoy.
Wow, what a place...went on a big wheeled bus tour and went along one of the beaches then into
a nature walk..... 8) 8)TLO has left the building.......

Camping on Fraser. There are
NP camping areas with facilities
Basic Beach camping in some areas with no facilities
and private camping areas i.e. Cathedral
No matter where you camp it will cost.06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

I can recommend camping in at least two places because the forests in the island provide a completely different experience to camping next to the beach.
I took kids so we used the fenced camping areas with facilities. Central Station is set in the thick of tall timber - lots of wild noises in the trees and underbrush at night and you're close by to many of the lakes. We spent time lolling about at the lakes, went across to the west coast for a cuppa at Kingfisher Bay. Took in some bush walks. Very clean camp site and facilities when I was there last year.
We then headed up to dundubara (sp?) so we could do Eli Creek, Champagne pools, Maheno wreck etc without spending all day in the car.
The further up you go (say Waddy Point) there is a better chance of leaving the day trippers (if you want some peace and quiet) behind as the tracks become more choppy.
The worst thing about Fraser are the loads of backpackers crammed into Troopies that infest the place... but alas, it's a free world...
