White grey exhaust smoke

I have had this on two occasions.
Both times had vehicle on idle for +/- 20 min.
On pull off, grey/white smoke ( excessive) for +/-
1km and clears.
First time standing in a cue, waiting for other vehicles
to clear a obstacle, @ +/- 18Deg C,
second time, early morning @ 3 Deg C.
A gap of two weeks.
No other signs in normal day/day driving.

First time happened with my brand new D3 during obstacles on LR Experience freeby - actualy all the D3's did it at the very last very steep incline. Instructor reckoned it was getting rid of excess sulphur Question

Happened again in Swaziland early morning after queueing at a road block - when I floored the pedal I could not see anything behind me for a cloud of white smoke and got the fright of my life.

Apparently nothing to worry about - save for the invirionmentalists amongs us Whistle

Also had it happen once or twice but the car still ran the same - so didn't worry too much about it

Here I am driving the son, his co worker to the airport, bragging,
only to see I am in control of a military smoke generator Big Cry .
Now this does my ego no good.
And if the TOYOTA boys get wind of this Embarassed .
DG could you please explain this condensation you refer to.
Is there a fix or do we just switch off the engine.

I've seen this in D3's a few times including my own motor ..it usually has happened after we have camped and have the motors ticking over in the morning so the engine temp is building very slowly - you drive away the white smoke appears for a short period but as your engine gets warmer and the humidity has evaporated from the exhaust system, the white smoke disappears.

Thats how it was explained to me but I'm sure someone who is more technically minded will be along to clarify shortly Wink

Condensation in the exhaust and low cat. tempratures cause the white smoke, soon disappears once the engine is being 'worked' - all down to the requirement to fit cat's. nothing to do with engine issues or design

You've just described my circumstances exactly . I had the car idling for about 5 mins while I hooked up the trailer
