roof rail fitting

Has any one fitted the roof rails themselves and if so how difficult did you find it? any tips etc.?
I have the PDF of the fitting instructions and it's not rocket science, however how easy does the roof trim pop out?

Cheers!

i was told by dealer (the sales dept) that you could not retro fit roof rails as there had to be factory fitted substantial support fitted to inside of roof, sounds like this is not the case !!

I had my rails dealer fitted a month after delivery. It took an hour or two.

Dead easy.

Open your tailgate fully, then lower the top bit, leaving the bottom bit down.
Stand on the bottom bit (it will take 2 fat blokes, so don't worry about breaking it).
You can get your fingers underneath the trim and ease it out- it is attached by 2 clips only and should come away easily (it goes back again easily too!)

If i recall correctly, the rails simply bolt in to the 2 bolts on the roof recess, and you will need to hacksaw the trim down to size a little. Easy job- no need to get LR to bill for 1 hr labour!

Had it since new - sold Jun 17 after 12 years and 214,000 miles

I'll have a look at removing the trim over the weekend.

I have Had two different dealers quote £220/£217 inc vat for supply and fit of rails.
I guess thats about an hours worth of labour.
You still need to buy the crossbars on top of this, for which I was quoted another £220.
Thule don't do any kits for the 'T' tracks yet, however it will only be a matter of time.

very easy

I installed those myself. It's extremely easy, took ~3 hours but I did it very very carefully and according the downloaded Pdf insructions.

Thule USA do a system for the LR3, I found it via there web site/USA/Land Rover/ LR3 .

BASE PRODUCT 430 Tracker II Foot Pack | LB50 Load Bars | TK12 Tracker Kit Select

I dont know any more about than this but if you hunt further through the specified components of installation PDFs you might find out more.

Thule UK told me a couple of weeks ago that they had withdrawn the units they had planned for the D3 because they didn't fit well. They said that they were working on a revised design but couldn't say when it would be out.

I'd like some Thule feet for my existing aero bar because not only are the LR ones not as wide as the car, they don't have sticking out ends to lash some rope around !

I'd also like some eyes to fit in the track for lashing points.

Carrying a mattress on the LR one last weekend with the bars as far apart as possible still left the front flapping and lifting and nothing to tie it down to.

If it had proper roof rails instead of those tracks there would be plenty of other lashing points (and somthing to hold onto when on top of wobbly stepladder washing the roof !)
